Someone listen to that ABC radio thing tomorrow morning and summarise it for us

Found this, nothing exciting. Just a brief bit about the history of the Freemasons in SA, a bit about the architectural bits of the building (anyone familiar with architecture and ancient Greece would already know about the different columns).

It shows the interior part of the building they'll be knocking down for this development though, not sure if photos of it have been posted in this thread before.

The well-spoken @Micbara was on the ABC Radio broadcast today. He said that the previous plans to incorporate a SA history museum component into the building did not receive funding/support from the state government, so instead they have opted to increase the hotel portion of the building. From memory this was increasing from ~230 rooms to over 300 rooms total.

Based on those comments, we are probably still some way off seeing any boots and equipment on the ground as the development application will need to be updated, before it then goes to building rules consent and tender.

More opportunity for revenue I guess, praying it stays the same height.

This change will undoubtedly delay the project noticeably.

They could use this opportunity to put in some apartments

Heres a cross-section of the Hotel segment for reference

A pity about the delay :(

The Sofitel did OK out of a mix of hotel and high-end apartments. If the hotel increases the number of rooms / occupancy, it appears (to me) to become more viable and to have a long-term secure income stream. Having museums and public spaces is always nice but need to be provided at relatively low cost to the public. Having a larger 5 star hotel increases certainty on the investment.

Having said that, I hope the observation deck area at the top survives in the updated planning. And would assume there will be an entrance fee ($10-20) to provide the owners with another source of revenue. I would happily pay to go up there - a great place to take visitors to Adelaide to have a spectacular view of the CBD, the city, and the coastline.

It sounds like only the bottom floors (which was the museum) will be getting repurposed into hotel floor space.
Theres a great opportunity to utilize this vast space and create an amazing attrium/function space/multi-purpose entertainment area/etc. to impress guests. Could also be turned into office space!
