This whole area feels vibrant and alive. Attention is needed on the streetscape on Grote St and past the Morphett St area. It would be nice to have some transit from Vic Square onwards to the Airport via this Chinatown Central Market area. A late night "Georgetown" style Hawker space could be a good opportunity to replace the foodcourts.
Unfortunately the Chinatown Food Court is already being renovated to be more upmarket and less foodcourty.

In my time in Adelaide, Hawkers Corner on West Terrace was always popular, cheap and cheerful. Its a shame it closed. Perhaps a similar concept could be reimagined for this precinct and facing Grote Street.

big shame

I don't like the new foodcourt on the other side of the street either... no appealing options

the plaza foodcourt had a lot more atmosphere and variety

Ironically, one of the new tenants in the upgrade Plaza Foodcourt will be Cheeky Greek? Not even of Asian influence.

How is that even allowed? Just like when Nordburger was in Chinatown for a bit.

It's The Greek Palace that's opening in the market plaza, not Cheeky Greek.
In Melbourne's Eaton Mall in Oakleigh, basically a Greek mall, you can find the odd Asian shop now too. The only people who seem to have a problem with these sorts of things, is bigots. That, and people with a personal vendetta against a prominent family of a certain ethnic background.

I'm not coming from a bigoted place, Im just pro-hawker. We have a sister-city relationship with Georgetown in Malaysia (Colonel William Light was probably half-malay and his father planned and planted Georgetown, a Malaysian city with a significantly large Chinese diasporic population). Georgetown is known for its street-art and hawker food centres featuring a variety of street food so why not. It could serve as a tribute to that connection. Their city literally holds an "Adelaide festival" every year celebrating South Australian Art, food and wine.

I rememebr the West Terrace, I also remember there was an attempt at a Hawker in the old food court near Realm but it didn't work as the shops were all brick-and-mortar, bizarre hours and it was in a dead spot of the city. It would fit more appropriately in a place with a vibrant night life such as near Chinatown.

My comment wasn't in reply to yours, it was mostly just a general comment.

It was probably in reply to mine, I wouldn't class myself as bigoted but I fully accept that that's how my comment came across despite that not being how I intended it. For the record, I would love to see more Mediterranean influenced restaurants join what appears to be a cluster of Greek/Persian restaurants emerging along Pulteney Street.

The skyline from that vantage point sure has changed a lot in the last decade.

It sure has. Found a 2005 photo on Flickr for a 20 year comparison.

I was surprised how prominent Sofitel is from there.

This tower will look great at night.
