I was just reading about the new studio on the ABC website. How good would it be if they had this kind of set up here, with the view out the window either being across the city towards the hills, or over the river/oval and up towards North Adelaide (if situated up high in Tower 2) or (to keep it on this thread's topic!) a panorama from a Lot 14 development out over the Botanic Gardens. I'm now going to be really disappointed if they don't replicate something like this here

The feasibility study referenced by SRW specified a "central location", which I took to mean CBD.

Translation: "It's dead".

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas says the state government has received funding commitments from the private sector to build a First Nations cultural centre Adelaide's CBD – but the stalled project still needs more money.

Mr Malinauskas has unveiled a 10-year cultural policy for South Australia and $13 million in new arts funding – none of which has been allocated to long-delayed plans for the Tarrkarri Centre for First Nations Cultures on North Terrace.

Construction work on the gallery at the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site has been on hold since October 2022, when the project’s managing contractor advised of a $50 million cost blowout.

The Premier has previously said the project’s cost – initially budgeted at $200 million – could reach up to $600 million. On Monday, the Premier said the government had received “not insignificant” funding commitments from the private sector but “we would like to see more”.

So Mali brings groundworks to a grinding halt seeking an 'independent' review of the project, that report concludes that it's a great idea and should receive more funding, only then for him to put it on the back-burner citing the new price-tag as an issue. Meanwhile, he continues to spend enormous sums on the Sport and it's infrastructure? You can't make this shit up.

The State is plunging into debt and there does not appear to be any business case for spending half a billion+ $ for this.

Several other States are planning or building indigenous centres, so the idea ours would be a national drawcard - as originally promoted - has pretty well dissipated.

I would prefer a significantly enlarged SA Museum and have a separate indigenous collection as part of that, probably achievable for $200m or so in total.

The empty Lot 14 site could house a new Concert Hall or other civic use that would well serve South Australia.

There really isn't much room for a large expansion of the current SA Museum, it's basically land locked. There is the grass area along North Terrace, but there is very little you can do without obstructing the beautiful facades of the Mortlock and Museum buildings. Same goes with the Art Gallery, which is also restricted in it's ability to expand.

Here's a bit of a wild thought. To solve the ongoing limitations for both the Museum and Art Gallery, and the need for somewhere to display the countless indigenous artefacts locked away. Perhaps the proposed Tarrkarri building (with some modifications) could instead become the new home for a new larger SA Museum. It could still include a large section dedicated to the state's indigenous collection and story telling. Though also include an exhibit showcasing the state's past and recent history, aswell as space for large touring exhibitions. The Art Gallery could then potentially expand it's presence next door into the museum building, allowing it to significantly increase it's art collection on display.

Regardless of what the outcome is, this location deserves the absolute best and must only be for tourism and culture purposes. Festival Plaza is already becoming a wasted opportunity due to greed, we cannot let this golden piece of real estate see a similar fate.

I'm sure a Mr Walker is already eyeing it off....

An expanded SA Museum is probably the most logical option to move forwards. You could design quite a stunning infill building on the North Tce grass lawns which still respects the existing museum heritage building and the Mortlock Library. Practical and achievable.
I think the current Tarrkarri site is more likely to be used for an expanded Botanic Gardens OR an expanded Adelaide University campus.
