What aircraft will they be working on?
I thought Kongsberg where delivering the NASAMS..

Aircraft wise for that new facility, they mentioned 737’s but I believe it’s for a whole range of other aircraft as well. Better be for 200 million.

I think Kongsberg are basing themselves here because Adelaide is the centre of the defence Industry Australia, And because they’re gonna be helping/fitting out the Hobart class destroyers and Hunter class at Osborne with Tomahawk missiles Or whatever missiles they make. Good to see them here, They are also building a factory in New South Wales to make missiles here in Australia so we have supply chain independence

The aircraft facility has already been announced and the site on Womma Road (just east of Heaslip Road) has been cleared. As far as I recall, it is aimed at the 737-based platforms - P-8 Poseidon and E-7A Wedgetail which would otherwise be sent offshore for their deep maintenance/modifications. The facility is/will be owned by the state government, leased to Defence and operated by Boeing Australia if I recall correctly.

New cutting-edge defence facility opens in South Australia

Global defence and security company, QinetiQ has unveiled a first-of-its-kind research facility in Adelaide’s north dedicated to advancing software engineering and rapid prototyping for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The Mawson Lakes facility features an on-site software development environment and an adaptable laboratory layout, designed for the rapid development and testing of cutting-edge technologies and supporting key projects outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program.

Chief Executive Australia Sector, Gary Stewart said the facility will significantly enhance the company’s existing capabilities.

“The establishment of QLabs marks a significant milestone in our efforts to grow Australia’s sovereign industrial ecosystem,” said Mr Stewart.

“It expands our niche software development and machine learning capabilities, and we look forward to furthering collaborations and innovation to safeguard Australia’s national security.”

With 110 employees in South Australia and a global workforce of 1,200 staff, QinetiQ continues to lead the way in providing integrated defence, security, and technology solutions worldwide.

The new facility marks a significant boost for the state, strengthening local capability and reinforcing South Australia’s position as the Defence State.

The QinetiQ release would be a lot shorter without the puff, but there's still a kernel of information in it. It's at Mawson Lakes, not Lot 14, for starters, and not embedded in any current Defence facility.

QinetiQ news probably belongs here. It grew out of the UK Government splitting the government's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) into a private development company (QinetiQ) and a smaller government defence research agency, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). It still has major Defence contracts in the UK, USA and Australia.

Dredging is now underway at the Osborne Naval Shipyard for AUKUS. Ship lifts/Dry berths to be extended and preliminary work on the nuclear powered submarine construction yard to begin.

The Albanese Government is set to invest $480 million into South Australia’s naval shipbuilding and submarine construction workforce with the launch of a state-of-the-art Skills and Training Academy at Osborne.

Work has now kicked off at the new academy site, which will be designed and delivered by Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) with design input from Kellogg, Brown and Root and Architectus. The facility is set to simulate a real submarine construction yard, offering a blend of hands‑on trade workshops, cutting-edge classrooms and a central submarine mock-up area.

This project forms a key pillar of the government’s broader AUKUS initiative, part of a $30 billion investment over the coming decades aimed at modernising Australian defence infrastructure.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles said, "South Australia’s industry will deliver billions of dollars in defence capabilities and thousands of well-paid, high skilled jobs – and the Skills and Training Academy Campus at Osborne is at the centre of this work."

At its peak, the submarine construction yard at Osborne is expected to employ up to 4,000 Australians during its build phase, with a further 4,000 to 5,500 direct jobs generated when Australia’s conventionally‑armed, nuclear‑powered submarine program reaches full swing – nearly double the workforce projected for the Attack class project.

"This isn’t just an investment in bricks and mortar – it is also an investment in generations of Australian workers who will be building our submarines, making their contribution to defending our nation and building a career for themselves as part of a future made in Australia," the Deputy Prime Minister added.

Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas welcomed this investment in South Australia's manufacturing industry, saying, "Developing the skills needed to deliver Adelaide-built nuclear-powered submarines is both the biggest opportunity, and biggest risk of AUKUS. We’ve seen at Barrow-in-Furness in the UK just how successfully a Skills and Training Academy can operate, and we’ll need to replicate that effort here."

The academy will also bolster the Hunter class frigate program, supporting at least 2,000 jobs and creating another 500 new roles over the next decade. These initiatives are part of the Commonwealth-South Australian Defence Industry Workforce and Skills Report and Action Plan, which is already rolling out over 20 measures.

Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, Pat Conroy expanded on the comments from the Deputy Prime Minister and Premier, saying, "The Albanese Government is building world class shipyards and delivering on continuous shipbuilding that will create thousands of well-paid jobs for decades to come. This initiative is critical if we are to have the workforce required to deliver the capabilities needed to safeguard the nation. This about making Australians safer while providing financial security for thousands of South Australians."

Key efforts include the expansion of the Defence Industry Pathways Program in South Australia, a pilot Shipbuilding Employment Pathways initiative delivered in partnership with PEER and TAFE SA, a Schools Pathways Program, as well as more than 1,000 additional Commonwealth Supported Places at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University from 2024 to 2027, and 3,000 technical scholarships for undergraduate STEM degrees.

This significant investment underlines the government’s commitment to building a robust, high-skilled defence future right here in South Australia.

Enormous defence industry precinct proposed next to Edinburgh RAAF Base

South Australia’s growing defence industry could be significantly bolstered with the Malinauskas Labor Government investigating rezoning a huge parcel of land to support the state’s manufacturing and defence capabilities.

A defence and aerospace precinct is proposed to be established immediately north of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Edinburgh Air Base, to encourage more defence industries to be based in SA and generate significant employment opportunities in the area.

The Defence and Aerospace Precinct Code Amendment will investigate rezoning 400 hectares of land at Penfield from the Rural Horticulture Zone to the Employment Zone and Strategic Employment Zone.

The proposed new zoning will facilitate a wide range of employment generating activities including industrial, logistical, warehousing, storage, research, training, and compatible business activities.

It will prioritise development for defence and aerospace related industries and build upon the existing industry already based in the area at Edinburgh Parks, as well as the neighbouring $200 million Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility which is currently under construction.

Proposed by the City of Playford, the code amendment has been initiated. A number of investigations will be undertaken as part of developing the detailed rezoning proposal, including traffic study, infrastructure requirements, concept plan and interface management with nearby residents.

Following these detailed investigations, community consultation and targeted stakeholder engagement will occur.
