I dont understand how its so hard to understand. How much its going to cost is an arguement. BUT, $110 millin they are apparently spending on AAMI, add the Land, Contributions from the AFL and hopefully the A League + Adelaide United. Federal + State government funding.

You have a stadium.

AFL + A League + the occasional Rugby/concert/special event.


Not only that but this stadium would be the launching pad for our commonwealth games bid

What about the the stack loads of money that needs to be spent on our disgraceful public transport system?, what about this growing water crisis?

How about we fix those things and more before even consider spending money on a new stadium, Perth's new stadium is going to cost a huge $850 million!. Now I'm sorry but I would rather that kind of money spent on fixing up SA's aging infrastructure and services then start looking at building one.

As for the Hospital yes it should be built on the Clipsal site and the Speedway in the CBD?! you've got to be kidding me .

...It's the Super Special Stage of the Acropolis Rally, held in both 2005 & 2006 seasons of the WRC (at the Athens Olympic Stadium). And rest assured, its popularity was IMMENSE!
In 2005 it was announced Rally of the Year.

I say bring on a new stadium! I won't add more to this debate as I would be repeating what a lot of you have already said, suffice to say, ozisnowman, thechap, paulns etc. all make great points.

Paulns, you have said a lot about Telstra Stadium that I was not aware of, it sounds great, but don't forget a few facts:

It was built in Sydney for the Olympic Games - NSW is a wealthier state than SA plus there was going to be an immediate infow of money from the Games. A central stadium to match Telstra Stadium in Adelaide is going to take decades, if not a century, to pay off.

Even Telstra Dome in Melbourne - there are a lot more people paying to see sport in Melbourne than there are in Adelaide, and the reason is not because of where AAMI Stadium is. There is simply a bigger population base who are sport-crazy to a greater degree than we are here (or just about anywhere, for that matter).

IMO This money would be far better spent on more critical infrastructure upgrades such as those already mentioned.

A stadium that size would not really be appropriate for Adelaide. But in saying that a new stadium of about 50,000, within close proximity to the city would do wonders for Adelaide itself. Even if your not in to footy, the flow on effects of more people in the city bring more atmosphere, life, and financial benefits to city pubs, clubs and restaurants!!!

Further more we will always to struggle regardless of our size for to attract events such as World Cup soccer and the Commonwealth Games with outdated venues like like AAMI stadium. We shouldn't always use our population as an excuse.

What I am saying is that in my opinion, if planned and managed correctly, a new stadium would actually MAKE money for the state, not cost money. Therefore surely there's no reason why we cannot have a new stadium, AND those other things. Let's not forget the MASSIVE amount of money to be made selling the land that the current AAMI stadium is on, which would surely go a long way towards paying for the new one.

Crawf, i merely trying to give examples of larger than life thinking. As Diamond has shown a lot more can be used with a great sporting venue other than football and the occasional concert such as AAMI.
I completely agree regarding money needing to be spent elsewhere also, but who said it has to cost taxpayers?
Why can't the land at AAMI be sold, existing infrastructure etc also sold. The land over the railyards should be made available at no cost. A private developer could recoup the money by commercial and residential buildings surrounding the stadium.

I lived in Melbourne and i will never forget one Sat night in town when a game had just finished at the 'G' and i think a concert at Telstra Dome(back then it was still Colonial). The city was packed. When your on a high because your team has won, or you have just been to the best concert, you don't want the night to end. You want to kick on and keep the great night going. What can you do at AAMI after?????

Melbourne, nearby clubs, pubs, cafe's, casino etc are packed after. It creates more of a vibrant, bustling city that we all want here in Adelaide. The economical spin off's are huge for the CBD. Stop pouring money down the drain at AAMI.

AAMI has no atmosphere compared to the 'DOME' with the roof closed, or the 'G'.
I'm an Essendon member so don't tell me i don't know what i'm talking about, but i'm here in Adelaide because i love this city and i want the best. We deserve the best, not just a second rate/second best/ near enough is good enough stadium out far away.
Thank god the Vics got rid of Waverley, at least they could look into the future....

i went to the U2 concert held at AAMI stadium last year. this was the largest event i have ever been to at AAMI.
after the concert, fans were forced to wait up to 2-3hours afterwards to get back into the city. these are 2-3 hours in which 60,000 people could have been shopping, eating, drinking, etc! but there are no such facilities in AAMI or its surrounds.
the atmosphere, which could continue for hours after these events, is always dampened by the fact that there is a) nothing to do afterwards whatsoever, and b) absolutely atrocious transport to and from the venue.

people say, do up AAMI, do up Hindmarsh, do up Santos. all this money should go into building a truly world class multi purpose stadium. why renovate a stadium which is both unattractive aesthetically and takes hours to get to and from?

I dont mind them doing AAMI up, it just scares me when they say they want it to last another 20 or so years, or that the public doesnt want a new stadium.

I realise SA doesnt have a stack of money right now, but in the future it will. So I'd say we need to start planning now, but lets be realistic, AAMI is going to be around for 10+ years before we can afford a new stadium.

THE sports lovers of Perth will get a 60,000-seat super stadium likely to be the envy of the many AFL fans who say AAMI Stadium is out of date.

A week after AdelaideNow readers overwhelmingly called for a new stadium to be built close to the city centre, the AFL, WA football chiefs and that state's government have brokered a deal to move the game from Subiaco to a brand new facility.

The WA Government's plan to build the $850 million stadium had been stalled by the West Australian Football Commission's preference to refurbish Subiaco.

But a deal was finally brokered yesterday after a day-long meeting that included AFL chief Andrew Demetriou, WA Sports Minister John Kobelke and WA Football Commissioner Neale Fong.

The Football Commission agreed in principle to relinquish its lease on Subiaco Oval, clearing the way for the development of the new stadium.

Mr Demetriou and Mr Kobelke said it had been agreed the best solution was to build a new multi-purpose stadium, giving the AFL priority use.

"We all support the building of a 60,000-seat stadium in this state and we all support the fact that football won't be worse off, " Mr Demetriou said.

Mr Kobelke said the Government had agreed to compensate the WA league for any losses under the deal.

"We've been able to assure football in Western Australia, both the clubs and the Football Commission and grassroots football, that it will not be worse off through the construction of a major stadium," he said.

The Government will decide on the location of the new stadium.

Thats because it wont be IN the city centre, but about the distance of hindmarsh to Adelaide.
