Does anyone know why somwtimes at 3 am on weekdays there is sometimes a plane flying over adelaide. Which airport do they go too? I thought that airports in australia are closed at this hour? where would this plane be comming from?
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
What type of plane are you talking about? Prop / jet, big / small?
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
It is definately a big passenger plane, most likely international
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
Living close to the airport I too have heard this mysterious plane at 3-4 am. I think it may be one of those secret CIA flights.frank1 wrote:It is definately a big passenger plane, most likely international

That is uncommon to have any international flights departing or arriving at this hour.
The earliest arrival for any international flight to Adelaide International Airport, if I am correct, is at 6am or slightly earlier, from Kuala Lumpur via Malaysia Airline.

I don't think it is actually landing or taken off, but just flying over adelaide. I was just wondering where it comes from and where it's landing. Ah! possibly this explanation. I remember reading in the paper a person saying on a trip comming from england he flew over adelaide at approx. 3am to land in melbourne, but that's only like 4:30am melbourne time. is melbourne airport open that early?
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
If it was on a Wednesday or Saturday morning it may be the SIA 747 freighter which is not subject to the same restrictions as passenger planes.
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
This could be right. Does this freighter plane land in adelaide or just fly over and where does it come from?
[COM] Re: #Completed : Adelaide Airport
It lands in Adelaide late on Tuesday and Friday nights. To / from Singapore.

The only planes that can use the airport outside curfew hours are the flying doctors planes im pretty sure. So an international plane landing at 3-4am is wierd???..........

Freighters aren't restricted by the curfew.rogue wrote:.....SIA 747 freighter which is not subject to the same restrictions as passenger planes.

Well isn't the curfew set so that nearby residents don't hear planes flying over them at night? Exception is flying doctors, which is reasonable as it is a life or death situation.
However why do freighters get to break the curfew?

Freighters are definately restricted by curfews, just like all other passenger aircraft If you land or take off between 11pm & 6am you will be hit with heavy fines.
As Jimmy stated, the only exception is the Royal Flying Dr Service for ugent medical transfers.
The plane that frank is hearing is more than likely one of the transcontinental flights that travel from Perth to Sydney in the middle of the night. They leave Perth around 2am local time and arrive in Sydney just after their 6am curfew. These flights usually track directly over Adelaide and Qantas operate older 747-300's on this service, which explains why they can be heard at about 3 or 4 in the morning.
