Is it just me or does that look horribly tacky?

I was having a read of the Messenger, and thankfully it appears that this proposal has been killed off by the council. It was discussed at the last Holdfast Bay Council meeting, and the majority of councillors were not very enthusiastic about it.

On September 27, 2007, the state government development assessment commission approved plans for the following:

Baywaters (Stage 3 of Baywaters Retirement Development)

The development is by the Karidis Corporation.

The $45 million, 5 level development at 2-8 Durham Street includes:

*basement carparking

*retail tenancies at ground floor

*73 apartments

*facilities for residents include: cinema, pool and gym

*95 carparks in total

*building will be 15.2m tall

A heritage listed property at 2 Durham Street will be retained and blended into the new building, however all other properties on site will soon be demolished.

The 5th level is setback from the street so as not to cast shadows or ruin the heritage charm of Durham Street.

Finally the Adelphi Waters development is under construction.

There's now a lot of machinery there on the site. I would estimate it will be finished
by the end of the year.

This project has been so slow !!!! The block has been vacant for a couple
of years and I think the development has been on the cards for at least
3 years. Must be disappointing for the people who purchased apartments
when the projects was first proposed.

Some things are a matter of personal opinion. I for one would strongly disagree with the statement that the Gold Coast is 'trashy'. I think the Gold Coast lives up to its name in every way, it's beautiful. Stunning in fact.

However I am sure there are a few badly designed developments there that probably shouldn't have been approved, but that's no reason for Glenelg to stagnate!

I'm all in favour of continued development at Glenelg. I think it has the POTENTIAL (of which the recent developments at Holdfast Shores so far have only just begun to scrape the surface) to be a world class intnernational tourist attraction.

I for one would love to see this potential start to be realised.

HOWEVER, I am not for development at any cost. All developments should be carefully considered and well designed, whether at Glenelg or anywhere else for that matter.

For an eighteen-year-old building, the Stamford Grand has done an admirable job of remaining one of the better developments the area has seen. To me, it has no need as yet for an exterior upgrade; the street frontage to Moseley Square is appropriate, especially when the floor-to-ceiling windows are opened in the warmer months; and, most importantly, the bar area has been cleverly separated from the hotel accommodation and apartments by careful placement of the pool area, restaurants and function rooms acting as a sound barrier - something the Pier didn't seem to take notice of very well.

Certainly, the ground level of Platinum and much of the Pier is absolutely horrid in the context of drawing people in and around the area - rubbish indoor/outdoor areas, if any exist at all. Look at the balcony of the Pier One bar - it's a fantastic outdoor area, but it's stuck out overlooking the carpark entrance to Holdfast Shores! What on earth were they thinking?

Despite that, though, Glenelg is still a very nice place to be. Thank goodness the Dublin was built where it was, and I'd like to see one or two more licensed venues around Moseley Square to really make it a viable nightlife destination.

Interesting what's happening down at glenelg at the moment.

They're building a big temporary stadium (capacity of 3000 people) in moseley square. I think this must be for the beach volleyball tournament at the end of march.

Strange that the event is not going to be held on the beach !!!!. I guess it's easier to build a temporary stadium on land !!
