747's of any variant are not considered 'low noise' and are not allowed to land during curfew hours.

The Bae 146 (wisper jet as its nicknamed) has limited approval due to its low noise signature and the fact that they do not need reverse thrust to stop when landing.

This is probably the most likely explanation. From what i said earlier, the plane is too high to be taking off from adelaide as i can barely see it and can fainlty hear it. Anyway, cheers for the input guys as the answer has been bugging me for weeks :shock:

ADELAIDE is a likely destination for low-cost airline Lion Air, which has announced plans to expand its operations into Australia.
The budget Indonesian airline plans to fly to 10 Australian cities.

Experts say Adelaide passengers soon could be flying to Indonesia with the low-cost carrier.

The airline's impending arrival puts the spotlight once again on the safety of budget Asian airlines.

In November, 2004, a Lion Air MD-82 skidded off the runway at Solo, Indonesia, killing 31 people.

Last September, 91 people were killed when the McDonnell Douglas MD-82, operated by budget airliner One-Two-Go, crashed on the Thai resort town of Phuket.

Although the Civil Aviation Safety Authority has not received an application from the airline yet, experts say Lion Air plans to enter the Australian market by the end of the year.

If the airline does apply to operate in Australia – a process that can take six months to finalise – it will need to meet strict local safety regulations, among the highest in the world.

Lion Air – Indonesia's largest private airline – plans to buy more Boeing 737-900 series jets to support its expansion.

The purchase would be in addition to 122 jets of the same type the company had previously ordered from Boeing.

The carrier is also looking at expanding into Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and the Philippines.

Lion Air president Rusdi Kirana said: "We are in the process of setting up our operation in Australia. We are planning to allocate six of our jets there, catering to 10 cities."

Derek Sadubin, chief operating officer for the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, said the airline was confident of being approved to launch services by the end of the year and this "could definitely include Adelaide".

Mr Sadubin said customers could expect "rock bottom discounted fares" if the airline expands to Australia.

But, he said, Lion Air would "have to work harder than other airlines because (the reputation of) Indonesian carriers is unfortunately tainted by safety issues in the past".

An Adelaide Airport spokesman said it was yet to receive contact from Lion Air, "but we are following their activities with interest and would look forward to talking with them in the near future".

Thing is, how many accidents have many top class british/american airliners had?? But people still travel.

We have strict guidelines in regards to plane safety which these plane companies will have to meet, so it wont be that bad.

Another low-cost airline would be good to increase adelaide routes and passengers. However, i think i will hold my breath on this one as disappointment is a recurring pattern.

Thanks for the video edgar. All those international flights were there.

I hate those periods during the day when there is a blank spot with only like 1 plane there. The airport needs more international flights during the afternoon and evening as they all come in the morning and the airport is like relatively empty all afternoon.

Yes, I saw it now.

Surprisingly the Adelaide Airport is quiet in the afternoon all towards the late afternoon.

ADELAIDE Airport should have Australia's second largest solar power plant on its main terminal roof by mid-year.

Work has begun on a solar panel system for Terminal 1 following a $1 million commitment from the South Australian government, Adelaide Airport and contractors Hansen Yuncken and BP Solar said in statements.

The 114 kilowatt system - 760 panels covering an area of about 1170 square metres - will produce enough electricity to power 30 households.

The system will not generate enough power to run the airport.

But it will slash greenhouse gas emissions by about 160 tonnes a year, the equivalent of taking 40 cars off the road, and cut the airport operator's exposure to expensive peak power prices, a BP Solar spokesman said.

The rooftop system will be the state's biggest and the second largest in Australia after the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, the spokesman said.
Effectively removes the effect of 40 cars at a cost to the taxpayer of $1million ($50,000 per car)...
