Hate to burst your bubble, but in the "boom" era of 2003-06, the record for cranes, albeit including Southbank and Docklands for Melbourne, there were 118 cranes. Yes, 118.

Currerntly right now, there are over 60 in the same area.

When I was in Dublin, at the top of the Guiness factory we counted 120 cranes....with hardly any of the buildings topping 10 storeys. It was the most unreal sight I've ever seen.

For Adelaide, 21 is amazing.
I remember the crane being erected for David Jones in the Mall made the news as it was the first tower crane for a fair while.

I actually have that article. It was a double page spread in the Sunday Mail titled "Boom Times Back!"

Well, I for one am really excitied about 2008 for Adelaide. Let 2008 be the year for a skyline lift and let 2009 and beyound for some real (hardcore) development for Adelaide such as:

Victoria Square Development
River Torrens Upgrade (considering that NYE was moved their, utilize the entire space to make it a great place to play like what they have done in Melbourne at the Yarra)
More Public Art
Better use of Public space in line with Hindmarsh Square Development
Rundle Street Upgrade

These are just to name a few. But, small steps often lead to larger - so we should be happy for the steps that we are taking..

Ben wrote:I have done a quick list of the projects that are eithier under construction or about to commence construction. Some of the dates are speculative but I have only put projects up that have confirmed they intend to commence construction in the FIRST HALF of 2008. there are many projects such as Currie St and City Central Towers which have a slim possiblity of commencing but it would be late in the year. There will no doubt be new ones throughout the year that will commence that we are unaware of at present. No matter how you look at it it's going to be the biggest construction year for the CBD this City has ever seen to date.

Image

I have over 21 buildings under construction up to July 2008:

Loc Levels Commencing

102-120 Wakefield Street 10 May
121 - 130 West Terrace 8 April
142 - 184 Franklin St (Gallery) 7 U/C
140 North Terrace 18 July
20 Hindmarsh Square (Hotel) 14 U/C
20 Hindmarsh Square (Apartment) 15 U/C
374 - 400 King William St (ex repco) 10 U/c
42 - 56 Franklin St 17 April
160-184 Franklin St (Altitude) 18 March
Aurora Building A 14 March
Aurora Building B 15 March
Conservatory on hindmarsh 18 U/c
City Central 4 (Aus Post) ? May
Edge KW Street 12 March
Wave KW Street 12 March
Hills House KW Street 14 May
IPAD 9 U/C
Lot 8 Coglin St 13 U/C
Octagon hindley Street 15 U/C
Spire Bentham St 35 June
Tivoli 10 U/C
Waymouth towers 10 June
Skyliner here. Been in Adelaide for 2 weeks - did the obligatory city inspection on foot as well as all development sites in the metroarea.
Noted the following U/C or fenced off ready for action in ther CBD. Like you ben, I have restricted this to 10 levels and over

Gallery ((Franklin St) 7 levels - Speculate 1 crane)
20 Hindmarsg Sq. (Crowne Plaza - 15 levels - spec. 1 crane)
20 Hindmarsh Sq. (14 level apartments - spec. one crane)
Repco site bldg. (11 levels - spec. 2 cranes)
Tivoli (10 levels + crane)
Octagon Hindley St. 15 levels + one crane)
Conservatory - Hindmarsh Sq. 18 levels - spec. one crane)
SA water (11 levels + one crane)
Hills (KWS) 13 levels - spec. 2 cranes
Octagon - Hindley St. - 15 levels - one crane)
Lot 8 Coglin - 13 levels - one crane
Next door to Coglin - Gouger St. 8 levels? One crane
West Tce student accommodation? (IPAD) 9 levels? One crane
City central area facing KWS next to GPO - is this going to be CC4?
Altitude (Franklin) 18 levels - Spec. one crane)

7 cranes in all - the max. was 8 in the mid eighties.

The evidence supports Ben's statement about 2008 being the biggest yet for Adelaide - providing the Sub Prime export from the USA does not kick in. 2008 promises to be an anti nimby year if you will.

Twins are the big new thing in Adelaide, with some identical twins at Port Adelaide, West Lakes, 140 North Terrace and The Precinct, and not so identical twins at 20 Hindmarsh, Aurora on Pirie and 42 Franklin. Add UniLodge to that list too, when we get some renders.

Just looked at the latest BRW mag. (very creditable) The Adelaide writeup (approx. P50 - 52) VERY favorable for 2008. Looks like we can see much more resi development here as well as high rise - in summary the reasons given
A. The mining boom - 'the next boom state' (quote).
B. Real estate prices the fastest rising in Aust. (CBD)
C Defence industry development.
D. Much more aggressive and effective immigration policy - evidenced by student pop. increase.
E. CBD resi development taking a much stronger hold here - reflecting cultural changes to CBD living. ABS says we had
17000 in the CBD in mid 2006 and as we know the ACC is aiming for a lot more. Now at 5.9% increase perannum.

Need any of us think we are in the backwaters - not any more :D :D :D
