Wasn't all that removed for the 6 level version?, and it only included apartments and high end retailers.

I reckon the project is still basically the same, though the street frontage building might be 4 levels and the other building will be 6 levels. Or has Anne Moran got her facts wrong and the whole thing is still 6 levels, because when you think about it you wouldn't make much money on just 4 level apartments AND how would Anne Moran even know about the latest plans when the ACC has no say in this project, only the State Government.
The 6 storey version still had the supermarket and cinema. I was highlighting how progressively this development has been dumbed down from what would have been a world class attraction fro Adelaide, complete with a 6 star hotel, to what we now have, which is essentially just another apartment box.
Whats the f*ing point in this development now then?

Makris should just plant crops on the land...it will probably give him a better return on his investment and he can save the land tax if its principle use is rural. The North Adelaide society can then reminisce what was there 150 years ago.

Anyone else notice that one lady in black that they kept cutting back to, was struggling to state a reason why it shouldn't go ahead? "um, yeah, its architecturally wrong, doesnt mix blah blah blah" I bet she couldn't tell a hammer and a spanner apart.

And surprise surprise, a certain councillor makes an appearance. *wink wink*

If I was the developer, I would just pull the plug now and forget about it. Leave the site as it is, a dormant wasteland. Infact, if I was Makris, I would use it as a dumping ground for other developments, you know the usual excess dirt and other waste from building sites. I bet they'd appreciate the original proposal for the site when there's rats and mice and feral cats all over their pretty little suburb.

Sorry I couldnt be a bit more coherent with my remarks there. The nerves just took over and I couldn't get my thoughts together very clearly. I now have new found respect for ppl like politicians who can answer questions on the spot and get it right. I really considered coming back with a pre prepared statement :)

Le Cornu site plans available

Posted 45 minutes ago

The latest plan for the old Le Cornu site in North Adelaide will be available to the public from today.

The O'Connell Street site has been vacant for nearly 20 years, and all plans in the past have been rejected.

The previous plan from current owners Makris Group was for a seven-storey residential and commercial complex with a cinema, shops and apartments.

The group's latest plan does not specify the exact size of the complex, only that it will be designed between five and eight storeys high.

Nearly 50 residential apartments will make up four levels of the complex, along with a variety of retail shops, cafes and restaurants.

The development report will be available for a six-week public consultation period.

Makris has really gone to cause quite a bit of confusion as to the exact plans for the site, lol. Between 5 and 8 levels high is quite a big relative difference.

Development Report
released for O'Connell Street proposal 23 January 2008

A Development Report on the proposed residential and retail development at 88 O'Connell Street in North Adelaide (the former Le Cornu site) has been released today for six weeks of public comment.

The detailed report covers more than 60 separate environmental, social and economic matters associated with the Makris Group's proposed development.

The Development Report was required by the Development Assessment Commission (DAC) as part of the major developments assessment process under the Development Act.

Written submissions commenting on the Report will be received until 5 March 2008.

A public information meeting will be held on 19 February at the North Adelaide Community Centre in Tynte Street, North Adelaide, at which representatives of the Makris Group will be available to answer questions about the proposal.

At the end of the six week written submission period, the Makris Group will have to respond to all issues raised in a formal ‘Response’ document.

The State Government will then assess the entire proposal before a final decision is made on whether it is allowed to proceed, and if any conditions should be imposed. A recommendation will then be made to the State Governor.

The Development Report and further information about the proposal and the major development assessment process can be found at http://www.planning.sa.gov.au/go/major-developments

PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT AND RETAIL COMPLEX AT 88 O'CONNELL STREET, NORTH ADELAIDE

The Makris Group has prepared a Development Report for a proposed residential apartment and retail complex at 88 O'Connell Street, North Adelaide. The proposal includes retail outlets, restaurants, a piazza and associated car parking, on land incorporating the former 'Le Cornu' site.

The Minister for Urban Development and Planning has declared the proposal a Major Development. The proposal has been placed on public exhibition by Planning SA from Wednesday, 23 January 2008 until Wednesday, 5 March 2008. Public comment is invited by Planning SA during that period.

Further information about the proposal, including the Development Report, and information on how to submit a comment is available from http://www.planning.sa.gov.au/go/major-developments. Copies of the Development Report are also available for viewing and purchase at the Adelaide City Council Customer Service Centre, 25 Pirie Street, Adelaide or North Adelaide Library, 176 Tynte Street, North Adelaide.

Never mind a 7-star hotel what about buildings that get a 7 star sustainability rating. Now that would be world-class and an Adelaide first.

Not optimistic given the standard of design and construction of the 'new' North Adelaide Village across the road from 88. Its an instant slum. Have you visited the toilets?

Le Cornu site: Make it happen, says Rann

Adelaide City councillor Anne Moran says she doubts the latest development plan for the old Le Cornu site at North Adelaide will convert any opponents.

A development report on the $150 million proposal from the Makris Group is open for public comment for six weeks.

The plan features a six-storey tower and four storeys of shops and apartments. A previous plan was for nine storeys.

Councillor Moran says, while she is desperate for something to be built at the O'Connell Street site, she is against the latest proposal.

"The (State) Government doesn't have to listen to the consultation, it's just being polite," she said.

"I think it'd be foolish not to listen to people if it comes back at the same way that our consultation came back, I think politically they would be foolish to ignore a very big no vote.

"I think this is really the same plan and will satisfy no more people than it did last time, unfortunately."

Site a symbol of inactivity, says Premier

The project has major development status so cannot be stopped by Adelaide City Council, which has a three-storey limit for the area.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison argues the council's role is not the issue.

"Obviously we would prefer to be the decision-making body but the important thing is we get a result here," he said.

Premier Mike Rann believes the long-vacant block in the heart of North Adelaide has become a symbol of inactivity in Adelaide.

"Obviously we'd all like to see an end to this. We're inviting consultation. Let's hope at the end of that process something happens," the Premier said.

"There'll always be a few people with objections but ultimately I think people want to see things happening and jobs happening in this state.

"And we're determined for that to happen and that's the process we're going through."

After years of debate and argument about the site, some nearby residents including Erich Brenner are just keen to see progress.

"If it goes up to six (storeys) so be it," he said.

"If it goes up to three so be it. I'm easy as long as something is done."

I had a strong feeling the plans didn't change, and that its still 6 levels with the streetfront building will be 4 levels. I hope it gets approved.

Majority of Adelaidians think this, they don't care what is built there just something to fill that disgraceful eyesore.
