SouthBank- Torrens
After visiting Brisbane yesterday and seeing South bank I was really impressed. The Torrens has the perfect set up and we could do a replica. An outdoor swimming pool which is made to look natural and real. Shops, Gardens, walk ways.
It would look great if they did it here, but they would have to do it on a big scale, along the whole torrrens Bank from the convention Centre to the Bridge. Would be the best thing ever

Its a grand idea, because it seems that the Marj is going ahead as it is and will be built on the railyards site, however, as far as the plans go I am aware that the last 5-7 rail lines (part of the metro network) will act as the property boundary, and therefore all the vacant land between the Torrens and the railways would be potential for development. Both Melbourne and Brisbane's Southbanks are key locations to gather inspiration from, as is to Sydney's Darling Harbour and Circular Quay, but I think we need to reflect on something that makes Adelaide, just that, a product of Adelaide, and not a product of Melbourne or Sydney.

This is what I agree with most. I don't believe we need to replicate what already exists elsewhere, but should develop the site in a way such that tourists will recognise the area as being something that is unique to Adelaide. That might mean some sort of landmark or focal point somewhere, and I don't necessarily mean a stadium either.Shuz wrote:Its a grand idea, because it seems that the Marj is going ahead as it is and will be built on the railyards site, however, as far as the plans go I am aware that the last 5-7 rail lines (part of the metro network) will act as the property boundary, and therefore all the vacant land between the Torrens and the railways would be potential for development. Good idea, but I think all the trains will need to disappear to make it work - this would probably mean electrification and subwaying the trains "out of the way". Leaving the entire stretch up to Marg free for a complete makeover, although I am not a fan of Marj but will leave that for the Marj thread and not here.

One could certainly build above the rail lines given the air rights to develop that space.
Re: SouthBank- Torrens
The parklands people will bitch and moan they want a rotunda down that way and thats about it
Re: SouthBank- Torrens
I would like to see a mini waterfront precinct with low/mid rise apartments, cafes, restaurants, shops and bars between the Casino and Morphett St bridge. Maybe also a footbridge, with nero lights.

Cafe's, Tree's, sculptures, paved areas, swimming areas and entertainment areas. A foot Bridge would also be good.
I've always thought they could Widen and Deepen the Torrens, and maybe let some sort of Boats use it? Maybe a Mini Marina?

cool - now we're thinking! This "Torrens Front" area would be a very attractive hub and i'm sure it could be built without huge expense. Agree with Muzzamo that we'll be fighting tooth and nail with the "wasteland preservation society"JamesXander wrote:Cafe's, Tree's, sculptures, paved areas, swimming areas and entertainment areas. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

I love that idea...but do you honestly think the greenies/nimbies will allow it to happen????
You have only got to read and listen to the furore created with the dredging of the bay here in Melb by the greenies to know that this wont get up..
But i take nothing away from your idea though!

I put forward a motion that members of the SA Forums take control of the Adelaide City Council as the minds, imagination and ideas in this place are amazing.

Although I suspect we're not as good at working to a budget.ReallyBad wrote:I put forward a motion that members of the SA Forums take control of the Adelaide City Council as the minds, imagination and ideas in this place are amazing.

The Greenies wouldn't have much to be fighting for, maybe a few birds. But if the river is deepened and Widened maybe we could encourage more habitat areas on the Adelaide Oval side for these birds.stelaras wrote:JamesXander wrote: I've always thought they could Widen and Deepen the Torrens, and maybe let some sort of Boats use it? I think it would just look really cool with almost a lake in front of Adelaide, boats, people and enjoyment. Like someone suggested, a footbridge could be built, with the Torrents Bank becoming the meeting ground for pre and post match gatherings.
