Oh gawd - this means that that frightful concrete core will still stick out like nothing else from the western view.

A whole glass cladding would have been nice.

Yes, a big shame they did not change the colour or do something about the cladding.

It is an improvement however. My previous perception of that building was an unfinished appearance due no colour and the dark glass makung it appear as though there was no glass at all.

Average overall - no real arresting impact as you get into Vic. Sq.

Driving to work last night this building will look far more appealing on completion of refurbishment.
Yes it could have been better But in my opinion it looks a hell of a lot better than our 5* hotel which
borders the square- Hilton. Why wouldn't they at least have the name emblazoned high up on the
eastern facade to light up the night sky. To me it looks like a barren fawn coloured box and needs a re-vamp.

I would have to agree with you now about the Hilton - the most uninspiring monolithic block of rock in the square. No colour, no neons, very unassuming and functional only.Almost appears unoccupied. What we want is exemplary architecture that draws one's attention and behooves it's presence in the city. Often done with just a coat of paint, a little greenery on balconies, some quality advertising (quite subjective here I realise) .

NOTE - it is not like me to knock anything in Adelaide (except the railways). Most of the high rise buildings have obvious merit and suitable standing IMO.

The northern wall of the Hilton could do with some full-length advertising on it methinks.

I'm obviously on my own here, but I've never had a problem with the Hilton or the SGIC building. The Hilton looked wrong on it's own, but once SGIC was built Ithought they complemented each other at the entrance to Grote Street, and they looked fine. And I would hate to see advertising down the side of the Hilton.
cheers,
Rhino

The Hilton definitely needs a face lift. I was thinking about hotels in Adelaide today and the city doesn't really have any 'grand looking' hotels (except for the Medina Grand and the Hyatt). Adelaide needs some unique grand looking hotels to put this city on the map. Maybe the Hilton could do a special face lift to make it look more grand.

I'm really quite disapponted with the SGIC refurbishment. I've always rated the Hilton and SGIC as the ugliest buildings in Adelaide, brown concrete blocks with absolutely no appeal or imagination. Agreed SGIC needs cladding or something to take away the drab brown, if anything the new windows just highlight the concrete look. An opportunity wasted IMO. It's a pity because the other side of the square with the law courts and VS1 is shaping up really nicely.

Its not brown, its a sandstone colour, you must be thinking of the Stamford Plaza

these hotels certainly arent "grand"... the hyatt isnt either.
the medina grand is the only thing close to a grand hotel left in Adelaide.

if you like grand hotel's you cant go past Spring Street's Windsor Hotel, absolutely stunning:

GHD are moving into this building as of 3rd March. Their address states level 4, but that is their postal address. They will be taking at least a few more of those floors currently being refurbished. Not sure what happens to the lawyers above when the upper floors get redone. Maybe they will move to the lower floors as well or maybe the upper most floor. This could actually still turn out alright yet. The almost transparernt but highly reflective green glass could go well with that sandstone-type cladding if it gets cleaned properly.

The lower three levels have now been covered in glass and looks a lot more modern then previously. I'll try and get pictures at some stage.
