Is the Proscenium Night-Club still at this address? I've not been inside myself but believe it's an alternative/grungy/gothic/retro club & concert venue. The DA probably consists of some low-profile wall mounted aluminium "back-lit" boxes containing "poster art" to advertise/attract people into the club....i could be wrong though...

The applicant for this project is the ACC so it is not advertising but artwork.

Grand plans for Morphett St

Louise Russell

12Feb08

ADELAIDE is looking to the famous Grand Canyon to make the Victoria bridge, part of the Morphett St bridge, more user-friendly.

Three glass-bottomed and sheltered seating areas have been proposed for the eastern side of the bridge, to be attached during work on upgrading the bridge's safety barriers.

City Council city places and project manager Doug Schmidt told this week's council meeting the seating areas - costing $300,000 - would double as viewing platforms, a similar design concept to the Grand Canyon's new Skywalk, a 20m glass walkway, 1219m high and able to take the weight of 71 Boeing 747s (more than 32,200 tonnes).

Adelaide's bridge platforms would have solar panels overhead and backless seating providing views along the Torrens and of events in Elder Park. The $300,000 cost was approved by the council.

What? I don't understand. You can't see Elder Park from the Morphett Street bridge, can you? There's the ass end of the railway station one way and sk8 park and the rail yards the other...

What am I missing here?

The Victoria Bridge is the part that crosses the Torrens. The Morphett Street Bridge is the part that crosses the railyards. They are actually two bridges, joined almost end-to-end.

Ahhhh see? I was missing something. I was thinking of the Morphet Street bridge over North Tce.. not the Victoria Bridge bit over the Torrens.

 That made my day. The new Google tiles are a bit rubbish quality, but at least it isn't cloudy over much of Adelaide like the last set. Notice also how much browner the land is this time? We need rain. :(

An interesting idea. It'd work better if there were more of a reason to walk along the bridge, such as a western entrance to the train station.

Now that my small brain has grasped the concept, I'm not sure if it's an idea of merit at all. The only people that walk over that bridge are some residents of western N.Adelaide who are heading to the University district and sometimes people attending the cricket grounds.

It would have to be a compelling destination in itself to attract anyone other than vandals I would think.

I'd prefer a footbridge from the Festival Centre area to Memorial Drive.

You raise a very good point. However, there are actually a lot of people who walk the paths along the Torrens every morning and evening, just for excersise. Of course, doing this project just for their sake does seem a little extravagant. I imagine once the Marge is built there will be a little more call for it.
cheers,
Rhino
