Are you serious?????? Where are you getting your information from????? I lived in Sydney for 6 years and Went to Whats now ANZ stadium (the Olympic stadium) tons of times and saw loads of different sports and concerts there (Rugby Union, AFL, Rugbly league, U2 concert) and as far as I saw in the 6 years I was there, it was easy to convert the stadium from rectangular to oval!!!!!!!!
No it isnt, See Telstra dome.

You can say what you like about the Libs but atleast their plan is appropriate for the future of Adelaide. We need a multi-purpose stadium in this city NOW.
So a new stadium, will help grow the population? (which is appropriate for the future of Adelaide)

The F1 left Adelaide because of a non appropriate stadium for the soccer world cup was built? The golf tournament left because of a non appropriate golf course in Adelaide is here? (which is bullshit, and you know it)

Yes a soccer game, hence why AUFC want a purpose built soccer ground in the city (which gets my whole support)

So Power home games are not worthy of Adelaide oval?

If we're going to spend a few hundred million on a new stadium in the CBD, I personally can't see the logic in making it exclusively for soccer.
Why do this, then continue to throw millions of dollars at AAMI Stadium as it falls to pieces?
You can't polish a turd, and let's face it - AAMI is a steaming brown stinker.

To be fair I don't think anyone has said that hospitals are bad things to invest in. It's the location that is the problem.
Sticking a hospital on a vast area of waterfront land is a wasted opportunity, particularly when you consider its proximity to the casino, Convention Centre, Hindley Street, and the sporting precinct across the Torrens. (soon to be linked directly with the new footbridge, if it goes ahead).

The triangular 5.5ha SA Water depot site in Thebarton, bounded by East Terrace, Port Rd and the railway line will be vacant in the coming years. The government proposes to turn it into a 'forest'. I'm not sure if they've noticed recently, but the cbd is surrounded by forest - empty, empty forest.

It occured to me that everybody could be pleased simultaneously if I were the King of the World. This orgy of development proposals seems disorganised and whimsical. I say we strip it all back and bang it head on.

Why not put the Marg on the SA Water site - which is not much smaller than the Royal Adelaide land, whack a 60,000 seat multi-purpose stadium, hotels, restaurants, exhibition centre, national train terminal and community square over the North Terrace Rail Yards, turn 5.5ha of existing parklands into a 'forest' with wetlands and then roll over and smoke a cigarette while we marvel at the King.

hahaha. 200 killer wasps.

To suggest the new hospital going on the SA Water site is just as bad as the Australia Post on Gouger St. Its far to small.

You seriously got to be kidding me. Adelaide has some of the best golf courses in Australia (such as Royal Adelaide & Kooyonga) so that is definitely not the reason it left Adelaide and the grand prix track was considered the best street circuit in the world.

And has anyone realised there could be problems with a stadium being built on the railway yards, plus where the f*ck are the funds spose to come from atm?

Hiya crawf, if you look at my recent posting in the "Official Mining Thread" forum you'll notice we should be receiving an extra ~$1b in mining income between now and 2012, plus $250m-$350m every year from that point going forward (all my fingers are crossed, working on the toes too). I realise these numbers are rubbery but it's the best i can compile at this point.

This kind of cash can make BIG things happen, and will hopefully generate a snowballing effect for the SA economy. Given our culture and typical lifestyle, a world-class sporting & riverfront entertainment precinct (coupled with vastly improved public transport) are very high on my list of priorities. Sure there will be problems, there always is...

A single sport (ie just soccer) ground would be a fatal waste, it needs to be multi purpose to pay its way and attract large events.

The location on the railyards is questionable. First, the grounds would need to be of a decent size to hold proper events. A proper sized grounds (eg Stadium Australia) might just squeak into place by itself, but what of the access roads, parking, and other infrastructure to support it? The only thing the site has going for itself is that it is near Adelaide Railway station and has the possibility to have its own station on the line.

The rail lines would need to be run under the stadium to fit...

I think we DO need a World class multi purpose stadium in Adelaide, just that this location is not suitable.

As we all know the Eastern States have always attracted the big sporting evernts, the big concerts, world class exhibitions etc. and some time ago I'm sure Perth must have said "F..k this, we want a part of this, no longer will we be ignored" so they are moving ahead and being pro-active in building a stadium and city precint to house such events .. unfortunately whilst we continue to procrastinate over such issues and demand we retain our brown and arid looking parklands (just google map of CBD Adelaide ... yuk), we will get squeezed out of hosting any such money spinning events.

Soccer, we will miss out on World Cup games ... only 3 in the whole of Australia ... you don't think people from interstate would flock here to see one of the three games??

I read that our hotels are jam packed with tourists for the Clipsal 500 ... AWESOME. Not sure if anyone has been to a hotel, but they do require employees to cook, clean, administer .. hey, they even have to be built!!!! .. this means JOBS, JOBS, JOBS for Farks sake ...

Concerts, how the f...k did we get bypassed for Bon Jovi .. what has Perth got that they had to miss us?? Foo Fighters, tickets sold in 30mins, but they see no need to have a second concert whereas Eastern states get a third or fourth!!!

In regards to Sport, the Eastern states have the benefit of League and Union being extremely popular, so soccer can ride on the backs of these should they claim the need for a 'New Rectangular Stadium' .. Adelaide's new rectangular stadium argument falls on deaf ears as its only supported by Soccer, which as a Soccer Fan sucks, but I guess we could attract the Wallabies??

Melbourne have the Storm and Union is well supported (as any sport over there) when the Wallabies play. They are already building a 32,000 seater capable of being increased to 50,000 .. Melbourne has no problems when it comes to any of the above!!!

Perth, well they are like us where Footy is gospel and the others such as Soccer, Union and Cricket get good support .. but they have realised some years ago that new infrastructure is needed to bring people, money and jobs to the city, so they have got things rolling with their new stadium.

Whilst our Polies sit on their hands and watch our Parklands deteriorate, push suburbia even further out of the city (increasing the strain on Public Transport ) and always, ALWAYS, look at cost cutting measures with every project they undertake, which then reflects badly on the State as a whole, makes us look cheap and inferior, we will get ignored and squeezed out of any negotiations to host world class events, be it sport or anything else!!

Perth is awash with cash atm, Adelaide isn't - end of story. Plus we have more important things that need addressing first such as the water crisis and train network upgrade before we start looking at building a state or art multipurpose stadium in the city.

I disagree.

AAMI stadium is multi-purpose yet it's only used by football. And that's because it's too big (pitch size aswell as seating capacity) for soccer. Soccer needs a boutique rectangular stadium, perhaps with a capacity of around 25,000 - 30,000, big enough to hold international matches, small enough to cater for the A-League and not feel too empty. Just like the one being built in Melbourne.

Anyone know of any multi-purpose stadiums that have solved the big oval vs small rectangle situation? perhaps movable lower-tier seating could be a solution? and are multi-purpose stadiums just an australian phenomenon due to cricket/afl vs soccer?

As long as the stadium is bordering right on Nth, East, West or Sth Terrace then that is all I ask. Forget about Keswick or Clipsal Sight .. although its just an extra 1 or 2km's from city that is far too far for Adelaide.

Would love to see new stadium on South Terrace side ... a whole new sporting precint .. both indoor and outdoor.

But I think perfect position, when considering rail lines, is on the West Tce side of city .. build a station on that side.

Access would be made easy with stadium surrounded by new station and THREE main thoroughfares in West Tce, Port Rd and new Henley Beach Rd (underpass is fantastic .. finally a decent build) .. so if some people do drive (as per AAMI) there hopefully won't be too much congestion.

Also the pic of ANZ Stadium on the railyards is after all an 85,000 seat stadium so of couse it 'only squeazes in' to that postion .. I think Adelaide would be building something around 50-55,000 (eg Tard Dome).

I think you're right that is it just a problem mainly in Australia. And even then only the southern states because the northern states have rugby grounds. Having said that some European soccer stadiums do have athletics tracks around the pitch.

I definately share your concern about the clipsal site and Keswick Army Barracks site. They are as far as way as Hindmarsh stadium is from the city and in many ways it may as well be at West Lakes in the sense that people will drive there and not use the city. It also doesn't offer any solutions to the parking problems of existing venues.
Would love to see new stadium on South Terrace side ... a whole new sporting precint .. both indoor and outdoor.
Only problem I see is that South Terrace is in the 'residential' half of Adelaide and not really anywhere near the transport/entertainment areas of Adelaide. And it's not only about distance but also atmosphere. I just think the South Parklands doesn't have the right feel for an entertainment area.
But I think perfect position, when considering rail lines, is on the West Tce side of city .. build a station on that side.

I agree. This side of the city is perfect. It's less residential, close to entertainment/eatery strips such as Hindley, Gouger and importantly the ACC and Government are keen to regenerate the West End.

Propose something like this in the south, east or north and people will complain at the loss of parklands but I honestly believe that the vast majority of people wouldn't be too fussed if we encroach on the West parklands.
