Me too ... overpass should be good for photography, if the forest themed mesh doesn't obscure too much. Tram 108 is tastefully
done out in Adel Bank / Festival of Arts AOA, for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Thanks Xaragmata. With a 3m wide 'walking track' I would say the platforms will not be over South Road.

ADELAIDE'S trams have increased their patronage by nearly 1200 boardings a day since the line was extended along King William St and North Tce.

Transport Minister Pat Conlon has seized on the increases, saying they make a ``compelling argument'' for future extensions of the line.

Figures obtained by The Advertiser show there were 711,000 boardings on the tram during November, December and January compared with 601,782 for the corresponding three months a year earlier.

Since the $31 million extension opened in mid-October, patronage jumped 18.8 per cent in November, 11.3 per cent in December and 15.8 per cent in January.

Mr Conlon said the figures justified the Government's investment in the extension - but the Opposition claimed it would have worked better if the new trams had been equipped to cater for the extra demand.

``There is no better measure of success than an increase in patronage. The extension has made the service far more attractive and it was a good investment,'' Mr Conlon said.

Opposition Transport spokesman Duncan McFetridge said the Government was advised patronage would increase by 30 per cent once the new extension was completed.

``People are being put off travelling on the new trams because they are just so crowded during the peak-hour rush in the morning and afternoons,'' he said.

``The trams just aren't coping because the Government rushed in and purchased the trams which can't be coupled up... they did it completely for a political timeline.

``The project could have been such a fantastic example of how a tram network could operate, but they have stuffed it.''

Mr Conlon said the Government purchased the right trams, saying the Opposition would ``criticise whatever trams we purchased''.

He acknowledged the trams were crowded during morning and afternoon peak hour, but urged commuters to consider what peak-hour rushes were like in other cities.

``If anyone has ever been on the London Underground during peak hour, they would know what crowding is really like,'' Mr Conlon said.

After having travelled on most classes of trams in Melbourne when I was there, I can safely say that our flexis are smoother riders then most of their articulated fleet. Because the C, D1 and D2 classes have rigid trucks under a 'body module' rather then swivelling trucks like our flexis, they do ride harder and also 'hunt' the rails more too. The only articulated trams in Melbourne that ride well are the B1/B2 classes and the oldest of them has just tipped 21 years old.

It is true, but the problem with an opposition who criticises anything the Government does is that they get the 'boy who cried wolf' syndrome. They wine so often and so consistently that even if they have a valid point everyone ignores them as a pack of idiots. MHS needs to wake up to himself, stop being an opposition in name and nature and be an alternative government. I might take him seriously then.

Meanwhile back on topic: If the tram line were to be expanded, now that we've seen how it behaves and how commuters have responded to it, where do people think it should go next?

I think, bearing in mind that light rail has only a thin corridor of service and many stops mean its range should be limited, that perhaps a run following the general direction of Port road, to West Lakes and up the arm to Outer Harbor, following the concentrated residential areas. Possibly considering Newport Quays?

seriously, what idiot could come up with this?

"put off" "stuffed it"

Honestly, only people with no proper English education, who loves drinking VB beers, loves their loud V8s, beat their wives and children, can come up with such phrasing about our current Tram system.

How can people be put off about the crowded trains? Every public transport I know, is crowded during peak hours. People live with it, unless they want to drive on their own.

And how can the government stuffed our new tram system? It hasn't been better off since it started operations, and the extension was just as good, if not, better than the old route. To say they stuffed it is a cheap childish typical opposition comments, from someone who cannot afford to come out with anything better if they were in the positions.

If they don't like it, just shut up, if they need to comment, say something constructive, not "put off" and "stuffed it" which solves nothing.

Both the overpass (though someone said an underpass would be better - I agree) and the extension proposal are great ideas - the 'proof is in the pudding' , and, 'when you're on a good thing stick to it'. The patronage stats speak for themselves.I believe the boardings will increase with extended flexi trams as crowding will not be such a deterrent.

It is a contradictory statement. If the trams are so overcrowded then obviously people are not being put off using them. On the contrary people are using the trams more than ever. And we all know why.

I'm auditioning as the next non-populus Liberal Leader:
Let's build a new train system with all underground lines, including new ones to Magill, Greenwith and Strathalbyn. Every person will recieve their own small train for their own use.

There will also be no more taxes and we will put a nurse and doctor in every home in SA. A 1m-seater stadium will be built on stilts above the city, and Adelaide Airport will be situated at Monarto, with a 1000km/h rail link linking it to the city. Travel is free of course.

Vote Liberal! :lol:
