It's okay, digressions are progressBenJ wrote:Well, you're not the only one but obviously we have come to differing conclusions. I think having a stadium by itself would be somewhat of a missed opportunity as the main priority here has to be to make the most of the riverfront. However a stadium with an entertainment/cultural precinct would appeal to more than just the footy fans and in around the rail yards it would serve to lengthen the 'cultural mecca' that is North Tce creating a true boulevard stretching kilometres and including some of this state's finest institutions. This would be a true tourist drawcard, not to mention what it would add for the locals. Why not envision it as an Adelaidean Champs-Elysées stretching from the Wine Centre, past the botanic gardens, universities, galleries, museums, libraries, etc all the way down to an entertainment precinct featuring a stunning stadium, public squares, cafes, bars etc. Open up the streetscape similar to what they have already done along Adelaide Uni and that would be special...Totally agree, I've moved past the WOW LET'S BUILD A STADIUM! stage and on to the Should it be built?, How can it be built?, What purpose can it be put to?, Where's the money going to come from?
That is; I have been thinking about it.
But I digress.
All of this is to say that we cannot lose 'the vision thing' amongst the details lest it all becomes too hard and we give up before we've even started. That so far is the story of Adelaide and frankly it's a story I'm rather sick of.
"Starting with the Wine Centre..." (lol bad example)
I see your vision and agree with it.
This is the kind of thing I've had in mind...
Something going on all down the length of North Tce is a great idea. The RAH should probably come out of the East end and be replaced by a number of developments, allowing the Botanic end to be developed into something that bridges the orphaned white elephant that is the Wine Centre to the rest of the University / Zoo area. A bit of residential amongst public buildings, restaurants, cafe's and so on, to add more people to the equation might be an idea. Something to open up all the separate sections into a cohesive whole that flows from one site to the next.
Then the public buildings (art gallery, museum, library) with the public areas that have been established enhanced to again link the separate sites and provide congress between them.
The Governor's residence is a bit of a hiccup, but moving on the hopefully redesigned Festival Centre with an Adelaide analogue of Melbourne's Fed Square, the Casino and Convention centre, city sk8, and a redeveloped lower Torrens Lake recreation area with The Marge hospital replacing RAH. Again with continuous linkage through all the sections to tie them together not loads of little boundaries that demarcate.
Then turning the corner down West Tce we find the start of the mile long Sports area with the new World Class Stadium and its associated carpark, and other facilities, footbridges link over the rail line to Mile End Station for PT to the area, and continuing across the line to the existing Mile End sporting facilities to the NorthWest and West of the Cemetery. Again all linked together to provide congress between the areas.
If the future tram extension occurs it would run down North Tce, West Tce and back to Vic Square.
Something like that anyway
Meanwhile back on topic: bottom line, A CBD stadium is a great idea, it needs to be multifunction to even warrant its existence, we need to hear from all the sporting bodies as to whether they'd participate otherwise it's a white elephant, the rail yard site is too small to do this thing properly so let's find a better site, and most importantly it needs to be integrated with nearby and new facilities, as well as PT, to make it work.
