We used to have a Marineland in Adelaide, but it was poorly patronised and closed in the early '90s. We used to have a lot of things that closed, does anyone know what happened in Adelaide that saw a lot of places close their doors, instead of expanding and renewing like they did in other places to develop into large theme parks and their like? I suspect it was our reasonably small population base coupled with the fact that we never really promoted ourselves interstate or overseas until relatively recently. I don't think so. Some things just run their course. Take the National Motor Museum for example. It's grown and grown, and is still growing, but it's going to reach a point where there will be nothing new for it to add, and unless it heads in a completely new direction (say, offering drives of renovated FJs or GTHOs on a privately owned track out the back of the museum), patronage is eventually going to slow down. No, the State Bank collapse and the recession in the early 90's combined to close a lot of shops and entertainment venues at that time. To think otherwise either shows you weren't around when it happened or you don't realise just how severe that situation was for SA at a time when manufacturing was rapidly being taken overseas.
Times have thankfully changed but you never know what may be around the corner. Hopefully a continued mining/defence boom, but who really knows what may happen in that time.

This IS the case. My brother, a CFO of a large firm of 1200 people (with HQ in Adelaide), has filled me in on this one. It was a detrimental event, but the rest of Asia went through similar times (look at all the abandoned theme parks in Japan as an example of the fall out) so I don't know if we can place all the blame on the State Bank. No Glenelg is our main tourist location, and in order to acheive a viable and good attraction (Aquarium) it would have to be located at our main tourist location. Glenelg would work great. Perhaps it could be run by the Adelaide Zoo Corporation (or whatever they are called). With Monarto, Adelaide Zoo and the Aquarium they would have the money power to keep refreshing their facilties.
Port Adelaide just wouldn't work, I wouldn't go to Port Adelaide just for an Aquarium. Port Adelaide is a dump.

It may become a jewel in the crown for the developers, but I'm not too sure about it being a cultural jewel. Yes, Port Adelaide has so much potential, just like Riverbank if the right buildings, bridges, etc., go up and the art and cultural aspects retained or implemented. I am disappointed that a Memorial Drive upgrade wasn't done long ago. That may have helped us keep the the Australian Men's Hardcourt Championships (SA Open) here. They could have also used the place for concerts, basketball, volleyball and many other indoor events. Of course parking would have to be a concern with it mostly going underground. Transport too would have to be improved with the possibility of the tram extension to Adelaide Oval and into North Adelaide. The footbridge is an excellent idea but it has to be coupled to more people using Riverbank and extending the cultural and entertainment precinct all the way past the Morphett Street Bridge. Placing the new 'Marj' hospital there would be a mistake. A tram extension should also go to the National Wine Centre and possibly further taking over the O-bahn to Tea Tree Plaza. A National Beer Centre envisioned by some of you could be housed in the old tram building or built where the rose gardens are in an iconic building. The rose gardens could be relocated on the other side of the Botanical Gardens on Frome Road (just a suggestion - as plants can be easily moved, but buildings not).
