Ideas for a greater public transport system

Exactly, 5 minute loading times! There's always some little old lady who can't find the last 5c piece... Go to Salisbury Station or Mawson Interchange in peak hour, it's far, far, far, busier. On that note, the Adelaide ticketing system means trains are a lot slower at loading than their eastern counterparts where you validate at the gates (if at all).jk1237 wrote:you can when ya go out to Modbury or Paradise Interchanges in peak hourAtD wrote:I'd like to see a train load of passengers queuing onto buses single file...
I grew up near the O-Bahn and used to think it was the best thing since slice bread. But standing at Salisbury or Mawson at 8.00 has nothing on Paradise or TTP, and they're tiny stations with tiny trains on national standards.

Re: Ideas for a greater public transport system
how about letting people board from the centre door, and just stick another ticket stamper in the middle of the bus, it would cut boarding times significantly. of course the new buses are a bit stupid with a very narrow middle door...think about how quick boarding would be without everyone having to validate their ticketsAtD wrote:Exactly, 5 minute loading times! A new chip-card ticketing system where people just get on and sit down would make everything more efficient. One of my ideas is to replace the railway station ticket gates with scanners like what they have in department stores, if u have a ticket a light flashes green, if u don't have a ticket a light goes red and gates close to prevent fare evaders from getting thru. the thing where peoples eyes get scanned kinda scared me in Minority Report so i thought my idea would be a suitable replacement without compromising on efficiency.
those 5 minute boarding times are a joke, i too am tired of the old lady looking for the 5c while holding up the line.

The new buses may have the problem of the narrow door but the older buses have an even bigger one, the doors only swing outwards as well as being narrow.Dusseldorfer wrote:How about letting people board from the centre door, and just stick another ticket stamper in the middle of the bus, it would cut boarding times significantly. of course the new buses are a bit stupid with a very narrow middle door...think about how quick boarding would be without everyone having to validate their tickets.

If you're truly that interested, I can arrange this...AtD wrote:I'd like to see a train load of passengers queuing onto buses single file...
Of course this is a moot point as a train load of passengers get onto multiple buses which take them to different locations.
Trains work well where you have a concentrated amount of passengers in one place who all want to get to another one. Buses work well in suburban sprawl. Trains can't leave their tracks.

If only Adelaide had an S-bahn rail system like the one in Munich, this youtube vid shows how efficient it is and how it works but the narrating is in german:

I drew up a plan of what it might look like Adelaide, for a city that is only 1/6 the size of Munich. Lots of stations were removed and a few were renamed :

Excellent. Now add the line between Port Adelaide and Dry Creek (through Rosewater) so that commuters from Outer Harbor can go all the way to Gawler (and the Barossa for tourists from cruise ships at Outer Harbor) and vice-versa.Düsseldorfer wrote:If only Adelaide had an S-bahn rail system like the one in Munich...

Re: Ideas for a greater public transport system
I would actually re-open the Woodcroft train corridor via the Tonsley line and reinstate Victor Harbor/Goolwa regional services through that corridor, leaving the Sellicks Beach open for standard passenger rail.
The Belair line should at least be extended to Bridgewater for standard suburban operations, with the track redirected between Lynton to travel directly to the Glenunga station, leaving the other stations to be serviced via the Woodcroft line as it services Aberfoyle Park, Happy Valley, Hackham etc.
The Dry Creek line should at least service to Northgate, and a new Golden Grove line reinstated in place of the O-Bahn track.
Grange should close, in place of a light rail corridor, servicing West Lakes also via the Port Road median.
Personally, I think a subway should run underneath KWS, servicing Victoria Square, South Terrace, Unley, and Wayville to connect directly into the Noarlunga/Woodcroft corridor, eliminating the need for those trains to turn down the Keswick corridor, which would still be used for Belair and freight services.
Another subway would open to connect the Golden Grove line, with a station at Adelaide University/RAH, and a sub-level station in the underpass where the O-Bahn currently dives in beneath Park Terrace, to service the North Adelaide and Hackney areas.
The Golden Grove corridor would have regional services to the Barossa via an alternative route, so to service Eden Valley as well, so as to alleviate congestion caused by having frieght, Dry Creek, Gawler and regional operations running on the Dry Creek line.
This would allow Adelaide Railway Station to be able to accomodate interstate and regional services across 13 platforms (existing 9 and 4 underground, which are non-terminating, ie: run-through, so no delays are experienced with interstate operations)

Re: Ideas for a greater public transport system
I just feel that the current railway station on North Tce is a bit of a lost cause for being our main railway station, mainly because it is underground. The best use for it now is a Railway history Museum with historic railcars, redhens, bluebirds, a couple of Jumbo carriages, and maybe even a steam locomotive on display on some of the old platforms for visitors to see. 2 subterranean platforms can go underneath the museum as part of the city loop with a glass dome to let visitors look at the new station below. If it was done well, the rail museum on the current terminus site could be really successful, while a new central station gets built elsewhere, elevated on west tce seems to be a good site.

This is how rail services should be run for the South and SE districts.
Sellicks Beach & Hackham / Victor Harbor rail services.
