Install roller shutters on your windows at home. We have them, and new houses being what they are(no double brick), has reduced the heat dramatically. The only time the aircon is on now, is middle of the day if anyone is home, or on a stinking hot night for a couple hours. Only down side is night is night, and day is...well night too. Its pitch black in the bedrooms.
It may cost a few grand, but the amount of money you will save on bills is worth it. It keeps your house cooler and also warmer in winter, so you save money. Plus its added security for your home.

Or just go to the beach like I'm about to do.

Get a cat to fan a block of ice for you or steal the neighbour's air conditioning. A very cheap solution

Open your refrigerator and/or freezer door, erect tent with opening adjoining the open section of refrigerator, sit inside tent, and enjoy.

I couldn't believe the difference in temperature and the lack of sea breezes whilst visiting friends recently at Clarence Park/Millswood - the air was so still and stifling.

Plus the radiative effects of all the concrete and bitumen in the urban areas.

My Tips:

• Live in a house with eaves!

• Live in a stone house or house with high ceilings

• Live in a house with some shading from trees

• Leave house open at night to air and close up in the morning - means you can hold off on using the air conditioner for longer

• Install whirly-birds on roof to vent roof cavity - this REALLY helps if you have ducted air conditioning, especially evaporative

• Replace incandescent lights with fluorescent or LED lights and try not to use lights during the day

• Stay out of and close off rooms with external walls that are facing the sun

I agree, for a while. Stone houses are good for the first 3 days. After that they reach critical heat and take about 2 days to cool down.

I wish I had. It's so my luck to come back straight into the worse heat wave on record...

(As an aside, I really love the descent into Adelaide. The view over the city is wonderful, and it really looks as though things are happening, with cranes scattered about the place and various things setup in the parklands.)

Hi all, long time no post!

Phenomenal stuff, I'm originally from Adelaide but now in Darwin, a bit a pissed I can't experience this because I love heat, more for the records only however.

Adelaide today has had the 11th consecutive day over 35C and the 9th consecutive day in a row over 100F. The 11 days equals the all time record for days over 35C in Adelaide and this is a summer record so to equal this in March is incredible. What is more incredible is there is a very good chance it will end up as 16 days in a row over 35C and 14 days in a row over 100F. That is one to tell the grankids about. It has also beaten Perth's 1988 heatwave as the longest capital city heatwave in history.....and come the end of it all will smash it.

Hope the fires are controlled over there, heard a new one near Willunga near Kuipto or something.
