At the upcoming ACC DAP meeting this coming Monday 17, March, the ACC is expected to grant planning APPROVAL to a proposal put forward by Skycity casino. The proposal is for a new 7 level underground carpark for 442 vehicles.

The new underground structure will be built under the current Station Road, but also under a section of the festival plaza. As such to allow construction to proceed, the Olga Lodge Fountain and the Hajek sculptures will be removed. However these sculptures will be returned upon completion of the carpark. The new carpark will descend 17.5m below plaza level. It's main entrance will be from a new redeveloped Station Road, with the above-ground entrance to the carpark featuring a landscaped roof to blend in with its surroundings. Furthermore as part of the project new cooling towers will be installed for the Festival Centre carpark.

Hope the Hajek sculptures get a new coat of paint (or perhaps accidetally get lost or broken whilst in storage!). We'd then have to do something bigger n' better :)

Wow, seven levels. Does this make it the lowest below ground (publicly accessible) space in the city?

The only other close to that would be the Myer Centre carpark.

I guess this kills any idea of a underground city loop.

It's still quite possible from an engineering point of view. Most deep level tunnels carrying transport arteries under cities are more than 17.5m below ground level. In Melbourne, the deepest tunnels of the City Loop reach over 38m below ground level, some parts passing under and around building foundations and basements.

a minor subject:

What's the story with the building on the southern side of Grenfell St (approx street number is 50-60 i believe). It has heaps of a/c ducts hanging out of several windows - looks like something from a tacky 1960's sci-fi film :-)

I was wondering the same thing. It's the old Wigg & Sons building...

I noticed them in January & wondered the same thing. I can only guess they are for extracting fumes from copy / print equipment, as
they are free hanging through open windows ... close up, similar to monotonehell's pic:
