hmm, interesting. i'm surprised they are permitted to do this - i think i'll go hang my washing out the window of the 5th storey over Grenfell st ...pretty sure the ACC would come knockin'!Xaragmata wrote:I noticed them in January & wondered the same thing. What's the story with the building on the southern side of Grenfell St (approx street number is 50-60 i believe). It has heaps of a/c ducts hanging out of several windows - looks like something from a tacky 1960's sci-fi film

News & Discussion: General CBD Development
Re: General CBD Development
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
Re: General CBD Development
Except in relation to State or Local Heritage Places Air-conditioning plant is not considered development.

My guess is it's to do with internal renovations, be it the removal of asbestos, painting, or something else requiring temporary hard-core ventilation.Xaragmata wrote:I noticed them in January & wondered the same thing. I can only guess they are for extracting fumes from copy / print equipment, as

Sometimes you see set ups like that pointing into skips, acting as a temporary garbage chute.

That was my first thought, but it's been like that for months. I forget when I first noticed it, but I reckon it was last year? That picture I took was possibly the third time I noticed it and it was 14/Feb/2007.AtD wrote:My guess is it's to do with internal renovations, be it the removal of asbestos, painting, or something else requiring temporary hard-core ventilation.

I took a couple of shots of Grenfell Street after the pageant (10 November), & they don't show in those.monotonehell wrote:That was my first thought, but it's been like that for months. Re: General CBD Development
Has anyone been into Regent Arcade lately? The demolition of the upper floor's happened recently and today (Mon17) if you nip into the arcade and look up you can see into the old cinema space with all the fancy plaster work. Also if you look up on the way out you can see the projector holes in the wall for the first time since it closed.
Aww memories... say bubbae to the old cinema. Looks like a two story shop frontage is being retro'ed into the space?

Yeah, I noticed that last weekend too. I'd forgotten just how spectacular that cinema used to be. I've got some really fond childhood memories of going there, and seeing it again last weekend kinda made me wish I'd gone there more often.monotonehell wrote:Has anyone been into Regent Arcade lately? It's = it is; its = everything else.
You're = you are; your = belongs to.
Than = comparative ("bigger than"); then = next.

That's quite a large site, about 100m across. Could be quite interesting, as it has the potential to make quite an impact.Ben wrote:From ACC. BEA site? Demolition should be commencing soon. prob too small for a tower crane though?

Council knows when to hold 'em on casino car park
Louise Russell
25Mar08
PLANS for a $20 million car park for SkyCity Casino are on hold amid concerns that its landscaped roof might obstruct the view of the heritage-listed Hajek Sculpture.
The City Council's Development Assessment Panel has deferred any decision on the 442 space car park until discrepancies about its above-ground height are resolved.
The seven-storey car park is planned to have five storeys beneath Festival Plaza, between the casino and Parliament House, and for the above-ground glass entrance to have a landscaped roof.
However the DAP was concerned the landscaping added to the structure's height, possibly obscuring the State Heritage-listed Hajek Sculpture on the plaza.
SkyCity Casino's planning team will now prepare an artist's impression of the plaza showing the sight lines from North Tce.
"It's a fantastic concept and I applaud it but I couldn't get my head around the roof (heights)," Cr Michael Henningsen said, in supporting deferral.
If the re-submitted plans are approved, the Hajek Sculpture will be dismantled and rebuilt after the car park is constructed.

Re: General CBD Development
Why would the sculpture need a view? It's not like it can see.
But seriously, when would landscaping (I'm thinking trees and stuff here correct me if I'm wrong?) be a bad thing? Why would the duplo blocks need to be visible from anywhere else?
I think that whole Festival Plaza area needs a holistic rethink. Work a carpark into a proper redevelopment of the entire area. Hajek Sculpture be dammed. (I cant believe that I just dissed art! @.@)
