Now that theyve gone the next step in establishing a PPP, is it too late to petition for a re-location of the hospital site, or is it pretty much confirmed they'll establish it on the railyards site?

The advantage to the Government is that they can set standards that have to be achieved and maintained, without having to do that maintenance themselves. The private owners will no doubt pass the cost on to the Govt, but a rental agreement would be set in place. The private company may also be able to complete maintenance for less cost than the Govt, due to a simpler tendering process.

would this idea be the same for the proposed new "super" schools and Prisons?

I would hope that the arrangement would provide that ownership of the building would revert to the Government after an agreed period. I know that this is the case of Southern Cross Station in Melbourne (one of the largest, if not the largest, PPP's in Australia to date) where it will revert to public ownership in 30 years (during which time the Victorian Government pays something like $35 million annually for the private consortium (ABN AMRO, I think) to operate and maintain the station). I would be very disappointed indeed for it to end up a(nother) private building on public land.

PPP's almost always result in the property being returned to the government after a nominated period. I would be very suprised if this was any different.

Latest from adelaidenow website today:
North Tce redevelopment Botanic Gardens to West Tce
GREG KELTON, STATE EDITOR
April 09, 2008 11:50am

REDEVELOPMENT of North Tce will extend all the way to West Tce as part of the new masterplan for the controversial $1.7 billion Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital.

The plan shows there will be access to the Adelaide Railway Station via a pedestrian connection along North Tce.

There will also be an investigation into the merit of a special railway station at the hospital precinct.

The plan, released today by Premier Mike Rann and Health Minister John Hill, says it is anticipated that future North Tce redevelopment works will continued down to West Tce "providing for an enhanced boulevard from the proposed hospital right through to the Botanic Gardens".

Do you think the Government can deliver on its promises and make North Tce a world-class boulevard? Have your say in the comment box at the bottom of this page.

Mr Rann said the master plan provided a detailed blueprint for the new hospital and had been released for consultation with the community over a five-week period.

"This is a significant step towards building this hospital," Mr Rann said.

"Later this year we will see work start on this site with the decontamination process getting underway."

Mr Rann said the hospital would open to its first patients in 2016.

Mr Hill said the new hospital would be the most technologically advanced health care facility in Australia.

"We will design and build this hospital with the comfort and ease of patients in mind and with guidance and input from clinical staff to ensure it is practical and functional for their uses as well," he said.

Mr Hill said building a new hospital was the best option for the health system and it would be replacing the "ageing rabbit warren that is the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a brand new, custom designed and built, state-of-the-art facility".

I still can't believe they're putting it there.

Poor Adelaide.
Instead of a place to live, we're a place to die.

We have a massive pocket of prime riverfront land in the CBD available, a stone's throw from the bars/clubs/entertainment of Hindley Street, pretty much right alongside the Convention Centre and Riverbank precinct, perfectly serviced by rail and alongside the proposed footbridge linking the south side of the Torrens to the sporting precinct.

What will we stick there?
*globe lights up*
I know... a hospital!

Well done, State Government.

It's about time the value of entertainment and FUN stopped being under-estimated and pushed to the back burner.
Until something changes, and we stop running around in circles discussing sunken gardens and other pointless and banal wastes of time and start thinking big, we're going to continue to be the backwater that the rest of the world perceives us as.

I will never vote for the Liberals, but I'm sorry... #$@% off Rann. LISTEN TO THE PUBLIC. It's not a Stadium VS Hospital debate. Nor should it be a referendum at the election. The public wants to know WHY have you chosen this site out of all suitable sites, WHY there has been little to no public consultation, and WHY THE @#$% YOU WOULD WASTE THIS LAND ON A HOSPITAL.

Ok now that I got that out of the system, I support upgrading our health care system, but not if Rann is hell bent on putting the hospital in the most ridiculous of locations.

i have an hour spare tomorrow and could draft a 1-2 page letter to Rann et al about this. What are your thoughts?
As cruel_world00's lucidly states, this is not a "stadium vs hospital" debate but is rather an issue with using prime waterfront land for the wrong purpose.

Regardless of how much I think this land should be used for a entertainment or leisure development, Adelaide needs a new major hospital to replace the RAH.

Please do. Something needs to be done before this government (who I actually support about 70% of the time, which is pretty good for me) screws up royally. Like I said...I am in no way stating that we need a stadium over a hospital, I think the public has the right to know how decisions are being made especially when they are not what the public wants.

P.S Rann, don't tell me what an election is going to be solely based on, you are quite mistaken!

there's no way im voting Labor in the next state election unless Rann changes his mind and scraps plans to build a hospital on the railyards.

complete lack of vision and forethought. he is completely out of touch with the Adelaide public.
