[COM] New Royal Adelaide Hospital | $2.1b
[COM] Re: #Proposed: Marjorie Jackson Nelson Hospital - $1.7b
A straight out NO for me for the marj being built on the eastern parklands. IMO they are truly beautiful, would be good if the west/southern parklands were like this.
I didn't think this would be possible but maybe we could have a close election in March 2010 or even maybe mid next year. Because of the issues such as the Marj, Train Network, city stadium, Workcover SA, Victoria Park, improving Adelaide etc.
Though I believe Labor are more focused on the long term future, compared to the libs. Such as Labor want to make sure SA is prepared for the future with projects such as Densal Plant, Mt Bold expansion, a new city hospital, new prisons, Northern Connector (which will make sure SA makes the most of the growing boom).
While the libs projects sound more exciting than Labor, however the projects proposed by Labor will be important for the states future and prosperity.
Though saying that I am starting to become 50/50 on who I'll be voting in 2010 (if I'm still living in SA then), because issues such as the train network, Victoria Park, and the location of the marj has really annoyed me.

Personally, I don't really see why the stadium even plays a part when arguing for the MJNH to go ahead on the current location. Most people aren't asking for a stadium, they want the land the hospital is going on to be put to better use and build the hospital elsewhere. Sure, a stadium would be nice, and hopefully a possibility in a decade or so, but an entertainment precinct is far more realistic and will be no chance if this hospital goes ahead on the rail yards site.

The entertainment precinct IS the stadium. Without the stadium what would such a precinct be that isn't already being done down the other end of Torrens Lake?cruel_world00 wrote:Personally, I don't really see why the stadium even plays a part when arguing for the MJNH to go ahead on the current location. The stadium is but one of many options... I mean you can have an Entertainment precinct involving proper restaurants, bars, shops etc without the stadium if they are so hell bent on keeping with AAMI. I don't know anymore, so much as been said already.

But you see my point don't you? All of those activities are going on in so many other locations around Adelaide, an entertainment precinct would need something that distinguishes it from everywhere else, otherwise it wouldn't have a purpose and would die the death of a white elephant. It would need two or three draw card tenants to be the cornerstones that attract patronage. Pick from ideas like; football stadium, basketball stadium, entertainment centre, casino, theatre, cinema, and etc. all of which we have elsewhere.cruel_world00 wrote:The stadium is but one of many options... Have you every been to Southbank in Brisbane? If not, you should go and check it out. As cruel_world said this is the kind of precinct which should be considered for the railyards. And speaking of the Festival Centre/Hyatt/Convention Centre side of the Torrens, I also see that as a tremendous waste of an absolutely stunning river frontage too and wouldn't exactly call it an entertainment precinct. I walk through there all the time and never see many people, and it's actually quite freaky after dark. Not a soul in sight. It should be bustling with people! It's such a beautiful part of the city and it's sad not to see it being utilised better.monotonehell wrote:The entertainment precinct IS the stadium. Thank you Joely, you pretty much summed up what I was going to say but was too bogged down with suppression orders, David Hicks and freedom of information shit that I couldn't convey what I wanted to say. I'd like to say I won't leave assignments to the last minute again, but it will always happen.

Sorry monotonehell, you were too quick for me haha. People seem to love being near water so I really do believe that some sort of entertainment development would be popular on the riverfront. And if I was to pick something from your list I'd choose to relocate the casino to the riverfront and have somthing similar to Crown in Melbourne.monotonehell wrote:See my previous post.Joely wrote:Have you every been to Southbank in Brisbane? I don't see why having another place for bars, clubs and restaurants...especially along the Torrens, would be a white elephant...I'm just trying to be realistic about the whole concept. I think a master plan needs to be in place to work towards eventually looking at having a stadium there...but they need to start somewhere. As long as they don't build the hospital there (somewhere else please) I will be happy. Whilst the rail yards are as is, there is always hope.

All of the things that Brisbane has down by their river would need to be relocated from other sites in Adelaide. I agree that an exciting entertainment precinct would be great down along Torrens Lake, but you need to find real tenants to occupy such a site. And if that involves killing off established areas inside the CBD, you wont get any support for that. Relocating the facilities of Footy Park to a CBD stadium is a great idea because West Lakes is the middle of nowhere in this context. But all of our public buildings (library, museums etc) live on North Tce, the other end of Torrens Lake contains the Festival Centre and so on. Relocating those would be an exercise in futility. For the western end of Torrens Lake to be an entertainment precinct we need new ideas for tenants. Not just a desire for the concept.cruel_world00 wrote:I don't see why having another place for bars, clubs and restaurants...especially along the Torrens, would be a white elephant...I'm just trying to be realistic about the whole concept. And I'm with you on last minute assignments. I was up till 2am last night helping my mate with his counselling essay.

That's nice of you to help out a pal.
I hate doing assignments that aren't spelled out clearly.. shits me to no end.
I guess you do have a point when it comes to our public buildings etc but I'm saying, why couldn't something like Rundle St work on the Torrens... do we not have the population to support it? (By the way, I am most certainly for the stadium idea it's just hard seeing it becoming a reality which is such a shame)

Because Rundle street is pretty much dead all week (except for friday and saturday nights). I think we have the population, but I don't think our population has the mindset that is needed to support the kind of city I want Adelaide to be. I love the bar, cafe` and entertainment culture. But everytime someone's tried to open up such interesting businesses in Adelaide they might see a couple month's patronage then people get bored of them and eventually they die.
I'd loved to be proven wrong!

I agree with monotonehell. I'd love the area to be an entertainment precinct, but as yet I haven't heard any ideas that would make it work. The area is fairly isolated, people have to go out of their way to reach it, so the area would need to be something quite unique to attract crowds. A few restaurants and bars won't cut it.
[COM] Re: #Proposed: Marjorie Jackson Nelson Hospital - $1.7b
I cant believe that the government announces a project this visionary and of this magnitude, and everyone in Adelaide starts bitching and moaning.... AGAIN. we need to get over this small town attitude and toughen up.
