Im not noticing any overhead pedestrian walkway between the flatforms and bus interchange. Surely being 2008 and with those dont play with train adds, and the fact that quite a few people may use this station, there must be a bridge. Anyone know?

There was no overpass between the platforms shown in any of the plans presented for this project. It looks like there will be new pedestrian mazes instead at the up end of the platforms.

They won't have a bridge or tunnel, but they will have automated pedestrian crossings that close automatically when a train approaches.

Oh my god, please that can't be serious can it AG. Im speechless. Any positism towards our rail system Ive had left, has just gone right out the window. A brand new interchange is being built and we cant afford to build a simple overhead walkway, that just about every station in Sydney, Melb and Brisb has. I am so embarrased to be a South Australian sometimes

I prefer the Automated Pedestrian Crossings, because there is no climbing, it's cheaper and won't be the new Oaklands Toilet For Numbers 1, 2 and 3, as Will outlined )

The Automated Pedestrian Crossings are also fairly safe compared to under/overpasses, and a lot safter compared to traditional Pedestrian Mazes.

I havent used one of them yet but i can picture people trying to jump them to get to a train stopped at the platform...

The only reason Mawson Lakes has an overhead walkway is because the overpass was being built at the same time which is a bit of a shame. However, I can imagine the new pedestrian maze being automated like the ones at Smithfield, Salisbury, Woodville and Hove which is atleast one step in the right direction. Also, the majority of stations in Melbourne do not have an overhead walkway although a good few do. Most have similar pedestrian facilities to what we have in Adelaide, just in better condition!

When I told you about number 3s Norman, you looked like you were going to throw up when I told you that and I occasionally feel sick when I think about it, especially after seeing the results on the steps to the subway at Parafield Gardens station.

Actually, I'm a bit dumbfounded as to why an upgrade of the nearby Diagonal Road wasn't also factored into the redevelopment, as that could have been used as pedestrian access in a similar way to the Mawson Lakes station overpass with a roadway. Of course that would've been more costly and more disruptive. The DTEI seems to have gone with the cheapest option here, at least the pedestrian mazes will be of the protected variety.

The Melbourne rail system is probably the most notorious for unprotected pedestrian mazes in Australia. Many of them are located adjacent to railway stations and railway crossings and there are several fatalities on them every year as people try to run across the tracks to avoid missing train services.

From what i remember the plans were originally for a $60 million interchange (probably including a branch to marion) but they scaled it right back (this was about 5 years ago). The marion plan would have linked with the major bus interchange at marion and would have been quite visionary, its a shame that it didn't go ahead (they probably wouldn't have had the rolling stock to deal with the increase in patronage anyway).

Completely agree with you about oaklands road, they could have had it grade separated as well, and by using a cutting there would have been a reduction in noise for residents. At least we got something i guess. What matters to most is a nice facility with somewhere to park their cars with CCTV coverage. The other benefit is that this is that little bit closer to the shopping center and much more prominently positioned as such so you might get a few more people catching the train from the city to marion shops now...

If that happens the local council should do a decent walkway to the shopping centre, or have a marion loop bus which comes every 5-10 mins and just does a loop round the centre and goes back to the station.

Although I didn't have my camera on me at the time yesterday, I went passed the site and it looks as if they are starting work on the bus portion of the interchange on the southern side of the railway level crossing. New concrete slabs for the automated pedestrian crossings (as standard, none on the system are laid with ashphalt) have also been installed on the Brighton side of the level crossing.
