To centralise on Adelaide is to belie the 60km radius Adelaide has developed, and while I support the majority of businesses going there, I think a certain amount of decentralisation is better. Of course, this preclude low-rise offices in the suburbs which are car-dependent. So I guess I do advocate centralisation, just not quite to the same scale as you, Howie.

And Mt Barker could handle a bit of upward development, too. I'm worried it will spread west and touch Adelaide eventually.

Why do we need Paramatta-style "sub-cities" when our own CBD still has SO MUCH room left to build? Maybe when we have high-rises all over the CBD, then, yes, we can create office towers in Noarlunga and whatnot, but for now, lets focus on getting a decent population first. Sydney has 4m+ people, and only 1 major sub-city. We have 1.1m and you want 4 sub-cities? I don't think so.

Not likely (thank goodness) because of the water catchment. Thankfully the Adelaide Hills will remain rural between the Hills Face and the top of the watershed for a long time to come. One of the reasons Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne are growing so fast is because they are the first places the freeway gets you to that's outside the watershed.

Then a train to there is in order- so people can live that life and have a fast route into town that doesn't rely on petrol.

How would the train run? Throughh Belair takes way too long, and the Freeway is too steep for heavy rail.

Sorry but this is a silly idea belonging in the 1960s. We are a city of 1.1m people, yet at times it does feel that way, because these suburban centres dilute the population. Why would you advocate further diluting the population. The effect this would have, would be to make the CBD a largely irrelevant regional centre only visited by those living in close proximity, as there would be no reason for those living further away to come. What kind of message would this give to visitors to our city? The CBD would look like a ghost town. Or is this your ulterior motive? To restore the village charm of yesteryear?

Quite right. This is exactly what Canberra City Centre (they call it Civic over there) is like. Nobody goes there except those who live close to it.

Please Rick, do us all a favour and read some of the topics where this silly proposal has already been discussed. The train trip to Mount Barker would take close to 90 minutes against 35 to 40 minutes on a bus down the freeway. No-one wants to spend 3 hours on a daily commute when they can spend 70 to 80 minutes on it instead. And if you don't have the daily commuters, you don't have a case.

Now you'll say put a faster train on. No can do - it still has to go via Blackwood.

Now look at the gauges - metro track & trains are broad gauge. That ends at Belair. From there on it's single track, standard gauge, owned by ARTC (Australian Rail Track Corporation), not TransAdelaide. Cost of train paths would be prohibitive, and ARTC will give preference to freight trains - that's what ARTC was set up for - look after the interstate rail track so that the freight can be taken off the road and put on the rails.

All this has been discussed at length in other places on this forum. Please don't start it all again.
