Hi, I am also looking for accomodation in Adelaide and was going through this thread. I found that the following locations were suggested here:
North Adelaide
Croydon
Plympton
Glanville
Kurralta Park

Can you guys suggest some more please? :) My situation is similar to Aseem - I am immigrating with my wife and will be looking for jobs after arrival. Till then, my budget would be tight to around $130 a week. So I am looking for a decent place (close to CBD - initially) from where we can commute easily for interviews/job consultants.

I hope you understand my situation. :? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

For the price range you indicated you wont be able to find rental accomodation in North Adelaide. North Adelaide is one of Adelaide's best suburbs, and accordingly the rents are high.

Glanville is in my opinion a little bit too far from the CBD, however you may be able to find a unit to rent for the price you mentioned. It is also close to Cosmopolitan Semaphore and the beach.

I would give Croydon a miss, it is located next to Adelaide's poorest suburbs, and crime and prostitution around that part of the city is high compared to other parts of Adelaide.

If I were you I would go for one of the units or apartments along Anzac Highway in Plympton and Kurralta Park. The area is nice, and is is located very close to the CBD and to Glenelg. However I had a look at my local newspaper and the rents for apartments in Kurralta Park are around $150-$170.

If this is too much you could try Woodville South or Woodville West, the area is not as nice as Kurralta Park or Plympton but it is a good working class/ middle class area.

You could also try a suburb called Richmond, it is very close to the CBD.

Appreciate your comments.

Cheers,

Shubox, North Adelaide is a suburb. A very expensive one. We're suggesting other suburbs that are north of Adelaide. The further north you go, the cheaper it gets.

...except for insurance

There's nothing wrong with Croydon. It's located next to some very nice suburbs and is only 1.5km from North Adelaide. Will, you're wrong about the roaming prostitutes and drive-by shootings - it doesn't happen in Croydon any more than it happens in CBD Adelaide. In fact, I'd say some areas of Adelaide central are worse.

:D yeah have to keep the insurance in mind too....
But any suburb with a good transport link to the CBD will do... :)
I checked the realestate.com.au and domain.com.au websites....they do have properties for rent near CBD for as low as $60 and there are many below $100 per week...but am not sure if these are good. I mean there could be reasons for their low pricing (small rooms, less amenities, etc).
Is there any way to inspect the homes from overseas? I can ask for pictures from the estate agents but am not sure about it. :?
Guys, any ideas that I can use?

There's nothing wrong with northern Adelaide. I myself live in the far north suburbs, and if you overlook the freight trains, flight paths, high-tension power lines and burnouts at 3am, it's fine. The police coverage is great, there's cops in our street almost every other day! There's plenty of 'greenery' too!

The only good thing about living in Salisbury is the express trains to Adelaide, and cheap ass rent. Our landlord loves us because, unlike prevous tenants, we pay our rent. He even comes over and does the yards for us.

Please read my original post more clearly, I never said that the street prostitution, the drive by shootings or the car bombs occured at Croydon. I advised to give Croydon a miss because it is next to Kilkenney and Centro Arndale. Last time I went to Arndale I actually felt threatened because I was probabaly the only person not wearing FUBU or Wu-Tang. And every time I drive down Hanson Road I see young women wearing skimpy outfits asking for a ride. I wonder what they are doing? However yes I will admit that Croydon is located close to Bowden, Fitzroy and West Hindmarsh.

I did read it. The fact that crime occurs in one area does not necessarily mean that the adjacent areas must be 'given a miss'. If so, then I can't understand why you would recommend Woodville South or West because it's about the same distance from the crime havens. Also, Croydon is not next to Kilkenny. You're thinking of West Croydon. I think you're over-exaggerating with the FUBU and Wu-Tang stuff. I've lived around Croydon (but not in it) for most of my life and I travel down Hanson Road almost daily. I have NEVER felt threaten or thought that somehow I'd not make it to another day. It's a working class suburb and with all suburbs, it's gots it problems but perhaps you should take a look again because it's certainly no ghetto.

I think I would really try out all the areas you have listed. In fact, my idea is to get a good acco...

In fact I tried calling up some of the places listed in realestate.com.au site, but when i mentioned that I would be coming after a month, I could feel the interest diminishing on my case :) .

Anyways, I think I will start calling up when my time to reach there approaches..

Al, calm down! Once again I recommend you read my previous posts. If the mention of drive by shootings and car bombs didn't give it away, I am exagerrating the truth a little bit. No suburb in Adelaide is a ghetto in the sense of the word. And to make things clear all of Adelaide is relatively safe compared with other countries.

However if I had to choose a suburb to live in, in Adelaide the suburbs around Centro Arndale are not my first pick.

The only comment I will not back down from is the FUBU and Wu-Tang.

I live in and around Centro Arndale. And I love it! :)

Great food, great atmosphere, alot of public transport, 15mins to the beach, 15mins to the city. Don't see why it's that bad, actually I wouldn't live anywhere else.
