Yes I've always wondered why US cities have so much open air car parking? Surely there's a more profitable use for the land!

It's surprising that the owners don't seek to develop the land or sell it to someone who will, especially in Houston with its lack of zoning regulations and readiness to build.

Many US cities (CBDs) have great looking buildings, but they can also be so sterile. Houston is probably a good example.

That must be a sunday? Or when everyone is in their offices. Do note however the complete lack of substantial footpaths, and the fact that that huge brown building dead centre is a 'parking structure' (as they call them over there).

While the skyline is well populated, all US cities of a particular age look exactly the same. Check out Phoe(eo?)nix, which also looks the same. But they all suffer from capitalism-itis which is a complete lack of any kind of city planning, other than utilitarian ones. Right now the majority of these cities are trying to work out how to shoehorn some community back into their simcity-esque blocks.

We're very lucky in Adelaide to have the street-level character that we do - we could have quite easily succumbed to the American form of CBD planning and development that existed in the '60s and '70s, which was essentially to treat the core as a place of weekday business and nothing more.

I agree. Maybe it has something to do with glass (crystal) being synonymous to diamonds, jewels and other precious stones.

Texas is a weird place, actually, the whole of USA (except New England States) is just a gigantic mess of poor urban planning and chaos.
