The SANFL have come out and said it will not be increasing capacity above 52,000 (in todays advertiser)Shuz wrote:Er, AAMI's capacity is 51,150, given the size of the Northern Grandstand being 7,000 seats, any western grandstand built right around to the corporate seats on the southern side (minus room for Medallion club etc) would well exceed 10,000 seats, 15,000 if they manage well. This pushes capacity to the 60-65k mark, not 55.Brando wrote:Huh, i should have guessed!NIMBY23 wrote:I think the plan is to raise the level of the western grandstand to the height of the northern stand. to 55k or so. Will be a good stadium once this is done.

The argument about improving public transport is a good one if you had a good stadium, but AAMI Stadium is (plainly) badly designed and no matter what extra work they do to it, it won't change the spectators angle of view and distance from the action. This stadium needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and if contemplated it should be centrally located, close to public transport and other entertainment and hospitality precincts. That's it.

Yep, location is crap and the seating arrangements are such that nothing short of demolition and rebuilding will fix that. Hence why I now declare that the official slogan for AAMI and arguing for upgrading it is:

The Government built Hindmarsh Stadium for soccer (and rugby) and Santos Stadium for athletics. And those venues are still too big for the attendances those sports generate. And, those venues are right near the city. What more do you want?
You know you're really clutching at straws when you mention rugby and athletics. What sorts of crowds do those sports draw here?
Whinging for whinging's sake.

You like the Government and their SANFL/AFL buddies are very short of vision. If we had an inner-city multipurpose sporting venue weTyler_Durden wrote:ozisnowman wrote:What a half baked approach by the government that supports AFL football. This proposal

could bid for things not only like the World Cup, but Major Rubgy Union Internationals, Major Althletics meets (Althletics World Championships etc)
it would be a possibility with a world class innercity stadium that is well served by hotels, entertainment and transport. All you would need
then is a better link to the airport.
At present you arent even thinking of things like the World Cup, Rugby Internationals, International Althletics etc your only thinking about domestic
sport which in your own small view of the world means AFL.

I can't believe the government is spending 1.5 million on a new superscreen at hindmarsh stadium!!!
That does not benifiet Athletics, Cricket or the SANFL!!!!

I think the Ten News report got it right - swimming is missing out because the government couldn't handle a $20m blowout to the Marion centre, and remember that was proposed back in 2004. Athletics are missing out because Santos Stadium urgently needs work done for it to ever host a national track meet again. Other sports like hockey need money, and then you have SACA funding an upgrade to Adelaide Oval itself. All this while $100m is spent on some fancy entrances, corporate suites, and new roof. It's cosmetic, it won't make the stadium a world class venue like Foley and Rann hope.
[DEF] Re: AAMI Stadium to recieve a $100million facelift
I wonder if the government pledged 100 million to upgrade Adelaide Oval would everyone be whinging there are other sports missing out?
but as Foley said (in the ten news report), wait until thursday to see who misses out.

All of those things can be held at West Lakes. You're making up stuff to try fit it into your ideal world. What you've suggesting is not based on reality.ozisnowman wrote:You like the Government and their SANFL/AFL buddies are very short of vision. Cities all across the world hold major events in venues futher out from their city centres than West Lakes is to Adelaide.

In fairness to Australian Football though, it contributes far more in return (in dollar figures) to the South Australian economy than what the government will ever put into it. Far more.Splashmo wrote:I think the Ten News report got it right - swimming is missing out because the government couldn't handle a $20m blowout to the Marion centre, and remember that was proposed back in 2004. Not being a sport watcher myself, and only ever having experienced Football Park on the field for concerts, I'm interested to learn what exactly the other members find lacking in the venue as a stadium (apart from its location and transport links). How does stack up against comparable venues?
Keep Adelaide Weird
[DEF] Re: AAMI Stadium to recieve a $100million facelift
Given the poor location of AAMI, I don’t think a tram line from the city will help all that much, as it will get swamped and will not be able to cope. Just look at the current problems with the Glenelg line during rush hour. It would be a disaster! A central city location would ease the pressure on the public transport network before and after games. I'm pretty certain that the last bus currently departs AAMI 20 mins after the final siren - you won’t be able to enjoy the new convention centre all that much if you have a bus / tram to catch.
It is pointless putting money into an outdated venue. It would be much wiser to wait 5-10 years with a view of developing something world class. This is as much a political move by RANN to take the focus off his hospital vs the stadium debate. Of course Leigh Wicker and the SANFL are only too happy to take the money and run, - holding the South Australian public to ransom living with poorly located subpar patched up facilities for another generation. I just want to be proud of Adelaide - but this is just another short sighted decision that we will regret in years to come.
