It is pointless putting money into an outdated venue. It would be much wiser to wait 5-10 years with a view of developing something world class. Of course Leigh Wicker and the SANFL are only too happy to take the money and run, - holding the South Australian public to ransom living with poorly located subpar patched up facilities for another generation. I just want to be proud of Adelaide - but this is just another short sighted decision that we will regret in years to come.
Definately, the SANFL simply have been lent on. Previously they had been saying one of the options on the table is a city stadium, then when the government got themselves up in a stink about it, they come back and say we'll if you build a city stadium we won't play there. It's politics at is finest. Talk about a perfect way to piss away $100m of our money.

There are still normal bus services which people can catch if they wish to hang around longer after the game. The Footy Express is an extra service to cope with high demand. It doesn't replace the normal metro buses that continue normal services. I've found the Footy Express to be pretty good. I don't see a tram line being able to improve on it.

On some routes there is also now a bus service an hour after the game so that you can go to the crows shed etc.

Also in terms of tram capacity if the new line is grade separated they wouldn't have a problem. Post extension they will have a pool of 20-30 trams with newer ones likely to be bigger and wider to draw on.

The could have 10+ trams waiting for passengers immediately after the game and with grade separation they would be able to leave immediately after they fill up and be in town in no time.

Actually, some buses leave 2 hours after the game. Adelaide Metro (2008) reports:
Two hour late departure SA Lotteries Footy Express services - Crows matches only

The following bus routes will have services departing the Crows Shed two hours after the conclusion of Adelaide Crows matches:

FX1 - to Golden Grove Village via the Adelaide O-Bahn
FX5 - to Elizabeth Oval via Alberton Oval, Mawson Lakes and Salisbury Interchange
FX10 - to Norwood Oval via City (a combination of FX10 and FX22)
FX14 - to Belair and Blackwood via Goodwood Road
FX18 - to South Adelaide Football Club via Marion Shopping Centre and Old Reynella Interchange

The following bus route will have services departing AAMI Stadium Interchange two hours after the conclusion of Power matches:

Has anyone actually considered the other side of this discussion? And that is that a stadium in the city would attract less people on a consistent basis simply because Adelaide people being what they are often stay home if they can't drive and park nearby. It's a sad fact of this city's culture. A city stadium does change the dynamic completely and faces completely different issues. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sympathtic to these people who drive everywhere, and I wish our society was not this way but no one can deny the 'car is king' mentality of this city. We all know it.

For the minority who do catch public transport a city stadium may make things easier for them. But for the vast majority who prefer to drive, things all of a sudden get a whole lot more difficult.

It just occurred to me. I thought it was an interesting enough point to raise.

It's a fair point i suppose, but AFL is v-important to many many people and could be a catalyst for a renewed focus on PT. Also, it'd be interesting to know how many people currently use PT to go to/from games at Footy Park.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Assuming a city stadium were to be built over the railyards, I would imagine that some form of on-site parking would be incorporated into the design, as well as employing the use of nearby parklands as match-day parking, as with Adelaide Oval. Football Park patrons are by no means unfamiliar with having to walk some distance back to their cars.

I do see where you're coming from, though - whenever my family goes to games, not only do they take a bag of wet-weather gear, but also chairs, portable tables, eskies, and all sorts of nibbles for afterwards - an amount of stuff that just wouldn't be easily carried onto public transport. I'd hazard a guess that many season-ticketholders would be the same, bringing barbecues and the like for pre-game meals and entertainment.

Maybe. But right now people have the option of public transport to and from the game, with drop-off and pick-up right at the front entrance, and a designated bus lane that allows buses a quick getaway ahead of car traffic. Most still prefer to wait for up to an hour in heavy traffic just trying to exit the vicinity. That's a damning indicator right there.
Also, it'd be interesting to know how many people currently use PT to go to/from games at Footy Park.
Funnily enough I heard Steven Trigg (Crows CEO) just this week quote a figure of 21%. He was only talking Crows games. I must admit, it was higher than I thought it would be.

One of the comments that really made sense to me was when a negative post said "Get over it, this is happening, just deal with it (in regards to AAMI, the Marj etc)"

And then someone came along and said, "Why should we just roll over and let this happen?"

TOO F*CKING TRUE!

People like APPA are vocal minorities that get what they want all the time... why should tax paying citizens like us put up with mediocrity if we want better for this state????
