Both ends of the line run on the streets. It would be hard to make changes for it from light rail to heavy rail, particularly at the Glenelg end. Plus this upgrade and the upcoming extension provide a link between the three busiest areas of public transport in the city. Adelaide Station is almost in the middle of nowhere, and if any heavy rail expansion in the city were to occur, it would have to be underground.
Petermaloney, as mentioned earlier, it is a light rail network, not part of the suburban rail network. The new trams are the Flexity Classic model from Germany, but whether they'll be given a special code or not is not known yet. Like how the Oscars might be labelled the O set.

There was a little story on ABC News tonight about the new trams and apparently Mike Rann has more plans for extending the tram line past North Terrace and North Adelaide. His words roughly "I don't want to announce everything today" and he was showing a few people from Portland around Adelaide showing them our new trams. My guess is maybe an extension to the airport.

Rann has mentioned that he would like to expand the light rail network before. He mentioned it when he officially announced the light rail expansion to North Adelaide. The ones that have been considered have been to Port Adelaide, and also a City Circle line. So it isn't anything new.
Update of the Glenelg tram line from 7 News tonight.
Artists impression:
Mr Rann with Miss Ten Fingers (yes, that is her name) from Portland, Or on one of the new platforms:
One of the Flexity sets under construction in Bautzen, Germany (note: the desto is yet to be converted):
Ditto (a bit dodgy):
