This would almost have to be the worst building I've seen in some time! It's lego-like construction and bleak presentation is akin to the horrors of Communist Eastern European architecture... the only difference is the colour - beige not grey!
It is a shocker from ground level (Hindley Street) and should be called Stark 88.

Fellas, what did you expect for student accommodation?

I reckon this development looks far better than that Ipad thing on Waymouth. I dont mind commie blocks. I love those large housing commision towers around Collingwood and Fitzroy in Melbourne. They're ugly but they are cool and very urban.
I may be alone here, but I think the end result will look OK for Spark

Ipad is by far a better quality design even though it's nothing exciting, and yes I agree many of the commie blocks around suburban Melbourne look very urban but we have to remember that these buildings were built in the 1960s and 70s. To have buildings like Spark going up in 2008 is unnacceptable, especially in Adelaide where we have enough ugly beige concrete buildings littering our skyline already. The last thing we need is another one. As Shuz said a while ago this thing closely resembles a mouldy cheesecake.jk1237 wrote:I reckon this development looks far better than that Ipad thing on Waymouth. I dont mind commie blocks. The good thing is that this building is pretty much hidden, you only really see it on Hindley Street.

And who's ever on Hindley Street in a condition to be staring upwards looking at buildings, anyway?crawf wrote:The good thing is that this building is pretty much hidden, you only really see it on Hindley Street.

spot on. Ben, I acknowledge there are better looking designs out there for student accommodation, but simple (and possibly cheaper) alternatives are just fine for the targeted market. Of course if a building like this were to be built somewhere where it would be (very) conspicuous (like Victoria Square) then I'd agree.Omicron wrote:And who's ever on Hindley Street in a condition to be staring upwards looking at buildings, anyway?crawf wrote:The good thing is that this building is pretty much hidden, you only really see it on Hindley Street.

Two wrongs do not make a right, and another bit of tack on a tacky street doesn't improve it.Ho Really wrote:I acknowledge there are better looking designs out there for student accommodation, but simple (and possibly cheaper) alternatives are just fine for the targeted market. Yeah well the crane is temporary. Unfortunately the building is permanent.Cruise wrote:I see one, Its added a crane to the skyline.Omicron wrote:It's horrendous. I see no redeeming features whatsoever.
