whoever wrote this article clearly has no idea about the geography of Adelaide's streets. Grenfell St runs on the eastern side of KW Street, nowhere near West Tce :wank:

Time to see what the SA Government is going to give and take away this year. There have been several hints that the Public Transport system should receive something more then a pittance this year (probably two a pittances) but we shall all wait and see.

The Budget should be active on there by 3pm.

Just found this news item on the homepage of Railpage (it is actually working this morning) which is copied from the ABC wesbite. While it is mainly a complaint from the State Opposition, it does give you an idea as to the scale of investment in public transport that we may be getting this year.
ABC wrote:The South Australian Opposition says the railway servicing the billion dollar Eyre Peninsula industry is in desperate need of repair.

The Opposition's transport spokesman, Duncan McFetridge, says the Government is being too city-centric in its plans for a $900 million upgrade to the Adelaide network. Dr McFetridge says the Liberal Party is proposing a plan for the electrification of the state's freight and regional train network. "Electrification of rail is the way to go for the future, even for long-haul rail," he said. "You see it all over the world that's happening. It's clean and efficient and that's what we need to do.

"We should be looking at what we need to do to reinstate rail because road transport is just going to become more and more expensive."

The Government says it will not be making any comments on transport issues until after the Budget is released.

Light rail to Port AND electrification?!

Jeez. I'm anxious to know what's in store. Only 2hours and 20 minutes...

The bit about Electrification was coming from the Opposition.

I have a question about budget annoucements. If something is announced in this budget, say a Tram proposal for example, does that mean it is likely to happen within the next financial year?

While the time taken does depend on the scale of the work, I'd say that a tramline to the Port would take around 3 years to implement at best. The Victoria Square - City West line was originally announced in the 2005 Budget and only went to the railway station with the railway station - City West section being added in the following year's budget with the whole lot completed in 2007.

The re-sleepering of lines etc. would be far cheaper than $900m. It has been previously stated before that electrification would cost $1-$1.5b. Whilst 900m falls shy of these figures, its possible that it may be directed to part of the network in a staged process, which many people have speculated for a long time would be the most likely option.

However, I will conclude it does make no mention of trains vs. trams (just rail overall) - this figure could well include the $300m slated for the Port tram, leaving an extra $600m in the piggy bank for further tram projects or contiuning with the resleepering work to the trains.

We'll wait and see. :D
