Although as a city, we need developments that set us apart, we should also be looking at successful developments in other cities and working them to our own advantage too. Generally why "Southbank" and "Docklands" are mentioned in the same breath as "new centralised city stadium"

Did I at any point mention I wanted this done straight away. I would like the government to not waste money on a stadium such as AAMI and show some vision with a masterplan. We aren't talking about next year here, I'm talking about 5-10 years down the track. I think it's reasonable to ask this of our government.

100 million is chicken feed, it will buy us a few more years to get by before we can afford a new stadium. just hang in there

BUILDING a world-class arena at the AAMI Stadium site would cost about $400 million, a senior industry expert and football identity said yesterday.

A new stadium could be built for $6000-$7000 a seat, without taking into account the cost of the land, he said. This amount also did not include upgrading transport links to the site.

``The figure for Telstra Dome to be built today is about $6000 per seat,'' the expert, who asked not to be named, said.

``On the assumption you've got the land, if you build a stadium for say 60,000 people, it would cost between $360 million and $400 million.''

Critics of the plan to update AAMI Stadium have questioned whether the project was anything more than ``tinkering around the edges''.

This was because important elements of a new or upgraded stadium, such as a closeable roof, would require major works including the replacement of current grandstands.

Architect Ron Danvers, who was one of the architects behind AAMI Stadium's original design, said a long-term strategy was needed.

``If you wanted to bring it up to the standard that was needed for international events, for the long term, we're not talking about incremental improvements . . . you really have to start again,'' he said.

``The structure there was designed to a certain capacity. In order to get the crowds in now that you need for major events, you've got to have a different kind of structure.

``From that point of view AAMI Stadium has reached the end of its useful life, where you'd need to have major reconstruction.''

Mr Danvers said the ground-level seating area could be retained but the stands needed to be completely rebuilt.

Engineering firm Dare Sutton Clarke produced a report earlier this year showing it was not viable to cover AAMI Stadium because of its large area and the shallow viewing angles of seating.

Director Mike Dare said maintaining the current stadium, while planning for a centrally located integrated facility was a better idea.

``I won't countenance any money being spent down there,'' Mr Dare said. ``The more they spend there the more they are locked into staying there.''

A consultants' report prepared for the Liberal Party has estimated it would cost $520 million to build a sports stadium in the city, while the State Government and the SANFL have said this would cost about $1 billion.

Port Adelaide Enfield Council Mayor Gary Johanson would like to see transport links upgraded to AAMI Stadium.

Mr Johanson said he was confident funding for a tram extension linking the Port with the city would be in this week's State Budget. A report, commissioned by five councils, will be handed to the Government this month on the viability of running trams to Adelaide Airport and AAMI Stadium.

With the way things are going, population growth, infrastructure expansion etc: There will be a need for a third stadium to cater for in future. Just be patient is all.

I don't mind being patient, I'm more worried about the Marj taking the land that could be set aside for this in years to come

I think if Labor ever got around to the inner city stadium idea, they'd moot it at Keswick, where Santos and ETSA are.

I see where you are coming from.

I think it is a similar strategy to the multi-million dollar upgrade given to the RAH about 6 years ago. In that case the situation is not as bleak as it may appear. Furthermore I am not too worried where an inner-city stadium goes. I am indifferent to it being at the Marj site or at the current site of Santos Stadium.

Furthermore, it you look at images of the Marj, the land adjacent the water will remain vacant. If there was ever going to be an entertainment precinct in that part of the CBD my guess would be that the cafes and bars would be built next to the water and not close to north Terrace. So seeing the situation in that manner, I think there is still hope. And, yes, just like Shuz said, we have to be patient.
