Not a bad building from the front, that. Had it still existed in its original form today, I'd be all for its retention with a modern ground-floor renovation, but the final form of LC House was far too horrid to be kept. I've never really thought of buildings from the late 19th century being given new facades and updates in the early 20th century, but obviously it had to have occurred in many instances.

Picture Australia is a fascinating website, isn't it.

Incidentally, we can probably thank this proposal for the likelihood that the GPO hotel redevelopment will be put on hold for the time being.

Hanging garden hotel plan for West End
Article from: The Advertiser

June 09, 2008 12:30am

A 23-STOREY, $65 million boutique hotel, featuring a garden overhanging Hindley St, is planned to help revitalise Adelaide's West End.

The Majestic Group has lodged a planning application with Adelaide City Council for the 283-room Majestic Vertical Garden Hotel. The move has been described as "bold" by Ian Horne, general manager of the Hotels Association SA.

He said if investments were to continue in the city, more money and resources were needed to attract major events here.

The Majestic Group is an arm of the Culshaw Group, which owns and operates such properties as the Majestic Roof Garden in the city and the new, self check-in Majestic Minima at North Adelaide. It also is responsible for the $400 million Point Boston Peninsula development on Eyre Peninsula. The new hotel, on the corner of Hindley and Blyth streets, if approved, would bring the company's investment in the city to about $200 million.

The hotel has been designed to reduce water use by 20 per cent and energy by 40 per cent compared with standard hotels.

"Our fear, not just for that development but for any, is that we are entering into turbulent times with the strength of the dollar encouraging locals to travel outside of Australia," Mr Horne said. He said the Government had to look at "putting seriously more money into promoting the state interstate and overseas".

Chief executive of the Culshaw Group, John Culshaw, said the hotel would "add weight to the steady revitalisation of this important city precinct". "We are hopeful the council will be very supportive of an iconic project like this," he said.

Minister for both Adelaide and Tourism, Jane Lomax-Smith said: "The Majestic Group have been significant investors and supporters of tourism in SA, investing in unique destinations and accommodation styles with a real focus on sustainability and smart ecological design".

The hanging garden thing ..is it just planter boxes filled wth ivy or something on the "slope" of the building? Thoughts...

I am very happy that we are getting a new shape of building. I am sick of squares and welcome the triangle.

Wow very impressive! The Majestic Group sure like their gardens. Finally we are getting some more interesting shapes and forms on our skyline. However, 283 rooms is much too much for it to be considered a boutique hotel.
