You mean a train service from Southern Cross Station (Melbourne CBD) to Mount Gambier, or from Adelaide?

either would be fine, but i think the Victorians would get on with it faster.

You won't see a train from Melbourne to Mount Gambier for 4 reasons:

- indirect alignment
- there's fuck all towns along the line between Geelong and Mount Gambier (lack of population) & lack of potential patronage
- lack of funding - VIC would not fund it as doesn't benefit VIC residents, why would SA fund a service to take people into Melbourne
- line is currently disused and would need major works - not worth it for a train with a few pensioners & ferals

well, as is we will never see proper Regional Rail in SA, it is a burden we will have to bear for ages on end, the regional towns will just crumble and die, no one will bother going to them because they cant get the because of the high cost, half the state will be jobless due to tourism failing because people cant get to the sites to visit. Hmmm, an interestingly bleak outlook, but i remember that this is South Australia and an O'Bahn is the best thing to do because it is not rail.

I apologise for the down feeling of the post (ie negative), because hope is now lost for regional South Australians and those how live just 20km out of the city with no decent Public Transport.

The Mount Gambier-Melbourne train would've probably existed had the original plan of the states foundation gone ahead. Victoria was supposed to encompass the entire SE of SA to, bordering on the River Murray. I kinda wish that was the case, they would've duplicated the Adel-Melbourne highway, and the trade links would have been better. However, I think Adelaide would be totally fucked on water.

In general, regional passenger rail is moot as once you get to the regional centre you need a car to get around. Imagine catching a train to a country town and then being dumped at the railway station. Once you visited the two or three pubs, the open on Sunday local museum and etc, then what? The reason we used to have a regional rail system was that before the 1950s not many people had cars, the reason it slowly died out by the 1980s was that everyone had cars.

Perhaps the cost of fuel may change this in the future, but as it stands, remote locations require you to have a car. If you live in one town you need to travel to another to see a doctor, do any kind of shopping other than daily necessities, and so on. And while everyone has their own transport, the only people catching trains will be aspiring wizards on their way to Hogwarts.
