I think the proposed makeover of Vic Park is not a bad thing. When you look at how big the area is its fair to say that it hasn't been that well utilised in the past.

The main problem i can see is the lack of parking. I can see a parking fine bonanza for the ACC when there are major sporting carnivals held here as cars will be littering the nearby residential streets...... come to think of it, thats probably how they plan to fund it

I just have one objection to this proposal..

Who the hell is going to use it?? When you think about it there are very little appartments buildings and major infastructure that can sustain suitable amounts of people. I really can't see the people of ROSE PARK with their walking frames going for a walk in the park..

Me personally i think it will be nice, but will not get used by South Australians...

I am a South Australian and I currently use Victoria Park for walking and I don't live nearby. Yes maybe I am a freak.

It is a fairly good place for excercise and can get fairly busy between sport spectators, walkers, runners and dogs. Although most of the time it is underutilised.

I think this is a good proposal overall. It will be good to get rid of all the old SAJC buildings and equipment and tidy the park up a lot.

A good proposal for what it is, but let's recognise the limitations of the proposal.

The ridiculous comments of Harbo about this being the start of a world class urban park the likes of Hyde Park in London or Central Park in New York is an absolute joke. :wank:

It certainly won't come close to either. Nor will it match something like Stanley Park in Vancouver, which sits right beside downtown. It is simply a small wetland, some new trees, a few ovals, a new running track and a sealed track for cycling and private schools to peddle around in their funny looking pod contraptions!

That stuff usually pisses me off in untold ways and makes Adelaide look really smalltime, but this time I think these were the reporter's words, just for information's sake, rather than Harbo or the reporter saying that we're going to have our very own Central or Hyde Park (which of couse, would be f**king ridiculous).

Although, the Rundle Convergence will no doubt resemble Times Square at some stage, just like they said.

As far as I know Adelaide is the only city of its size or larger in the world that is ringed with parklands. While Victoria Park cannot really be compared to Central Park, is there a reason that the parklands as a whole cannot become a world-standard park? Instead of being dead open space all summer, they could be made into something world-class, they certainly have the size, when looked at all together. Bits and pieces of them are already fantastic - I don't see why Adelaide can't eventually be ringed by parkland that matches Central Park for the range of ammenities on offer. What is being offered in Victoria Park is a good start.

You know, if were Victorians or Queenslanders we wouldn't hesitate to insist that it was comparable to Central Park or Hyde Park. But, we're South Aussies, and so we can't possibly compare ourselves to those world icons, can we? (sarcasm).

Not bad, I like the new sporting fields. Just get on with it now so we can stop hearing about how world class it's going to be.

Central Park is the heart of NYC and a thoroughfare across the city from the East to West side. It's constantly humming 7 days a week. Victoria Sq is the heart of Adelaide, not Vic Park. There's no comparison, it's ridiculous.

Anything is better than nothing. If this is done, victoria park can be crossed off the list of the 'things that never change' in adelaide. The le cornu site in north adelaide is the other.

They need a decent master plan for the entire parklands, rather than this piecemeal approach.

Interesting that this will be another project for Oxygen. That's good news, actually, insofar as they've been responsible for a few fabulous projects around the city.

Would be good if this included a outdoor venue for concerts - similar to Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. However it will be killed of by that group I can not stand.

There's a difference between insisting that we have facilities to match the likes of central park and building something that pales in comparison, but still comparing the two.

There's no reason why Adelaide should not aim big, but in situations where it clearly hasn't, but would like to think or would like the public to think it has, it just comes off as embarassing.

anyway, my opinion of this proposal...it seems to be the same as anything else. nothing visionary, nothing out of the box, nothing iconic. once again, a wasted opportunity.

This may sound weird, but I believe Vic Park is actually "too far away from the main action" to be made a destination in itself. I like this new proposal because it's only a few million bucks, and turns a horrid eye-sore into a pleasant and perpetually green section of parklands. It also leaves the gate open for further development at a later date.

Let's focus on the Torrens Waterfront region for "invigorated and exciting" parkland related development and activities...
