The Marina development/holdfast shores would have been much better if it wasn't so venomently opposed, now we have to live with a compromised development which is a real shame... because the area had so much potential.

I am not familiar with the various design solutions proposed for Glenelg. How did the opposition compromise the development? What could we have had instead?

For example the Platinum on the beach apartment building would have been 15 levels. Instead of the 2 level shops built fronting Moseley Square we could have had a cinema complex with shops. And where the current community centre on Colley Terrace is, they had planned to build a 6 level hotel.

What about the young people who are forced to leave SA because they are frustrated with living in a time warp?

Furthermore where do you believe the right place is for high rise?

Your argument is incorrect. Building more dwellings lowers property values, supply and demand. Besides, housing price rises are what you should expect if you live next to the beach.
City Girl wrote:Its just a shame Glenelg beach has been ruined so much. It used to be one of best beaches around and now it has the marina between Glenelg and West Beach clogging the sand flow, and high rises blocking off the view and feeling of the beach the beach is close to ruined.
Sure, Semaphore and Henely are good beaches, but thats not the point.
Blame the local council for that. They opposed the Holdfast Bay development for so long and with such irrational arguments that the state was forced in to say "enough is enough." Even some of the original protesters admit the first proposals they were against are better than what was built.
City Girl wrote:Does everyone want Glenelg turn to "the suburb by the beach"? Catch a tram from the city to... the city :?
I have no idea what you're trying to say... Try leaving Adelaide for once and see what the rest of the country is like.

IMO I believe Glenelg is much better these days, I'm a huge fan of Holdfast Shores Marina and the 'new' look Moseley Square. Though it would be good to see to a few more low/mid rises in the actually suburb.

agreed, down the spine of jetty road would work well, as well as more over near adelphi terrace and the patawalonga even.

True without a doubt, but isn't that what always happens with every development proposed in Adelaide?

For example, how many people remember what was proposed for the John Martins department store site in Rundle Mall? For those who don't remember that I'll tell you. David Jones (who owned John Martins for some time before its closure) had proposed to build a landmark tower with a unique iconic star-shaped observation level at the top. Also in the building would have been a 5 star hotel, apartments, some office space. The 3 or 4 lowest levels plus the basement would have been a new 2 level department store called John Martins (yes they were going to preserve that brand at the time) and quite a number of specialty stores, plus a food court.

This would have been a true SA icon, something to put this city on the international map and bring in tourists. Instead we have ended up with a very average looking box with only a (admittedly nice inside) David Jones and very few specialty stores. The reason for the objections were that a/ People wanted to heritage-list the old John Martins store, even though its owner clearly had decided it was no longer suitable for its purpose, and
b/ The building was supposedly "too high" and would have been a danger to aircraft (which is a rediculous thing to say about any CBD building).

At the end of the day the Adelaide Central Plaza building is ok, and the Holdfast Shores we did get is much more than ok, but it's still sad as we could have had so much more (and these are just 2 of many examples)!!!

Hey guys, I've been reading for a while now and this is my first post. I know this isn't the right thread but there were some strong views in here about Glenelg from residents and and South Australian's I believe.
Well I'm currently doing a Stage 2 project on “To what extent has the changes to the perceived value of the Glenelg area caused exclusions and increased pressure on the coastal fringe?”.
Which basically includes how the rising house prices and apartment prices are excluding people who cannot afford them eg Elderly, how the developments are making Glenelg secluded and the pressure from places such as the Gold Coast are bringing more extravagant developments closer to the shore and blocking views. And if these issues are occurring, what can be done to fix them? eg. Public places.

Through reading this thread I've observed that some of you have strong views on the suburb of Glenelg and are residents as well. I was wondering if some of view would like to give views on Glenelg, the issues above and if it has lost it's beach side feel. Also if you've been a resident for long time what Glenelg used to be like, if you feel its becoming secluded now , is it being disturbed by high rise buildings and any improvements you would like?
As the council of this area I was wondering if I could hear a members views on Glenelg and if it has lost it's beach side feel?

Thanks guys and any information even if only brief would be extremely appreciated.

hi gizmo, perhaps start a new topic in the visions/suggestions section titled something like "Glenelg - a beach too far". I'll happily post my thoughts...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Bit of an odd chartacter.... I wasn't aware a decision had been made to close the cinema. I hope part of the redevelopment plans is a new cenema.

From the Messenger:
Glenelg cinema history a tear-jerker

Kym Morgan

DON`T CLOSE IT DOWN: Aaron Richards in his favourite seat (Number 21) at his beloved Glenelg Cinema.
AARON Richards has grown up at the doomed Glenelg Cinema in seat 21, front row, centre, to be exact.

He has been sitting in the seat since 1974, when his father, Allen, took him to the animated Disney feature Dumbo.

The pair searched unsuccessfully for a spot high up in the middle of the theatre before Mr Richards, then aged 7, convinced his reluctant dad to sit in the often maligned front row.

``That was when cinematic history was born,'' he says.

Mr Richards, 41, of Glandore, has since watched scores of movies from seat 21 in cinema 1. ``I've seen Star Wars, Grease, Planet of the Apes, and more recently the latest Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, all from that seat,'' he says.

``The massive carpet expanse in front of the seat came in handy when I was rolling around laughing during Blazing Saddles.''

The chance the seat might already be taken when he arrives to see a film just adds to his cinematic experience, he says.

``That's one of the great things about it.

``As I ascend that staircase each time there is that anticipation as I wonder whether anyone is in my seat, and that little rush I get when I see it's empty.

``If someone is sitting there, then I'm not completely pedantic about it. I'll just sit next to them in seat 22.

``I have thought about making my own little reserved sign for the seat.''

Mr Richards says he was shattered when he learnt of Wallis Theatres' plan to close the 1937 Art Deco cinema and redevelop the 1346sqm Jetty Rd site into a retail precinct. The cinema will close in about a year.

``For me, nothing will ever come close to replacing the entire experience you get at Glenelg.

``When I walk through those front doors and I see that grand old stair case I get a little rush. You just don't get that feeling anywhere else.

``I got it when I walked in for my first Dumbo experience and I've got it ever since.''

Mr Richards hopes to continue sitting in seat 21, long after the cinema has closed.

He plans to approach Wallis to buy the seat and hopes to set it up in front of a wide screen plasma TV in his shed, which he is converting into a home theatre.

``If I can get my hands on it, it will take pride of place. It's certainly well worn in.''

Mr Richards was due to watch Get Smart from seat 21 last weekend.

There doesn't seem to be any indication that they'll retain the building?

Ok ok I can admit defeat when I make a bad point opposing development. I have a couple more questions...
Does anyone know how long the (current) bay junction complex has been there? And when is demolition due for the building?
Cheers
