Great to see Tiger will be based here as well as Melbourne. This replaces the Jetstar crews that will leave Adelaide in part of the Qantas Sydney headquarters inspired cost saving. This latest slash and burn is just part of the ongoing Qantas war about control, wages and cost cutting, we are collateral damage.

And everything has gone quiet about the Adelaide airport car park, the Adelaide airport hotel and the extension (of a couple more gates) to the eastern end of terminal 1. Any news?

By the way, even today the cost of producing a barrel of oil is around $5 in OPEC (which includes Norway). It varies between $4-6 a barrel depending on the quality and the amount of the volatiles that have to be stripped out from the oil (sulphur etc). So if the price of the production is $5 and the cost of a barrel to consumers is $130, some middle men / companies are making a real killing out there. I think futures traders are really a part of this.

Anyway, there is enough oil to see me through the next car or two and by that time we will have perfected other forms of oil efficient engines (ie the hybrid diesel is looking progressively better for future bmw) to drive us. We will find a way - we are imaginative and resourceful- so I am not that concerned about running out of oil just yet. This form of public scare campaign has been around since the mid 70s, when the major environmental disaster was about global cooling and how we were all going to freeze to death. That was after the early 70s impending global disaster of overpopulation within 20 years and just before the early 80s running out of food disaster in the next 20 years. Now it's the disaster of climate change that we all have to be scared about, but because there is no global warming we needed another name.

So don't panic! Oils ain't oils.

That would probably just be the cost to pump, ignoring the cost of licences, taxes, building the rig, drilling the well, capping the well, building the pump and building the pipeline.

Futures traders can not increase the long term price because the last thing they want is a physical delivery of a million barrels to their offices on Wall Street. It's supply and demand that effects the long term price, and nothing else. They must sell the contracts before they mature, which counters the upward pressure from buying the contract. Futures traders work on the short term prices, providing liquidity to the market to assist both matches suppliers and consumers.

New Jetstar schedule changes for Adelaide
New one stop connections through to Vietnam* and Singapore
From 1 September, Jetstar will implement some timing changes to its 37 weekly services
through Adelaide and will introduce some new one stop connections through to Vietnam*
and Singapore with Jetstar.
The timing changes are a result of Jetstar’s decision to close its aircraft and crew base in
Adelaide with services to be operated from other bases within the Jetstar network.
The Adelaide changes provide some new flying opportunities for Adelaide travellers
including a daylight daily service to Darwin (an increase from the five times weekly offering)
with Jetstar connections onto Ho Chi Minh City* and Singapore.
Other changes include Adelaide-Melbourne (Avalon) now operating Adelaide-Melbourne
Airport (Tullamarine).
Adelaide-Sydney and Adelaide-Cairns services will experience timing changes with all
affected passengers to be contacted in advance of their flights.
These changes will come into effect from 1 September 2008.

Thanks for the Headsup Frank. That explains why the flights from Adelaide to Avalon for the Airshow in March next year were 'locked' and could not be sold.

I would be good if Jetstar start operating their Airbus A330's on International routes out of Adelaide (as long as its not at the expense of the Qantas QF81 / QF82 Singapore service)

Good news from Tiger. In addition to more Melbourne flights, they will fly to Hobart, the Gold Coast, Perth and Alice Springs, from next March.

Hi talrok, Qantas are expected to take delivery of their first A380 on the 13th September in Toulose France. They will fly it back to Aus and land in Sydney to much fanfare. You can bet that after all the negative publicity that they have had of late that they will do their best to overshadow it with the arrival of their biggest marketing tool yet.

Long story short, they are still planning to conduct regular training flights in and out of Adelaide, but this is now likley to be over a week or so in early October.

When i get some more firmer details, it will post it here.

Cheers

Thanks for that bm .. lucky the delivery on the 13th is a Saturday and not one day earlier .. haha!!! I bet that's all Qantas would need right now ..

Not sure if this is normal .. but was flying back into Adelaide from Melbourne Tuesday night .. landing went well but after a few seconds it seemed the brakes or whatever is used to stop the plane, were applied excessively .. I felt my whole body move forward suddenly .. as we finally slowed down you would expect to taxi off the run-way .. but the pilot did a full on U-turn .. started revving back UP the runn-way, then after what seemed like about 50 or so metres taxied off ... for a second there from the sound of the engines it honestly felt like he forgot his wallet and was flying us back to Melbourne to get it .. I guess he just overshot the landing a little .. would love to have onboard cameras of the pilots view of the runway .. dooh!

If it was the day before, it would have been the 12th...

Sounds like reverse engine thrusters kicking in that threw you forward.

Sounds like the pilot either came in a little hot or did a bit of a 'floatie' and set down too far along the runway and therefore missed his designated taxiway exit. Thats why he would have applied exessive wheel braking to pull her up a bit quicker. The Thrust Reversers are pretty powerful but they wont usually give you a jolt forawrd when they are applied as it takes a few seconds for them to spool up. Interesting that the pilot performed a U-Turn rather than ask for clearance to use the next taxiway exit.

I heard that it can only land and takeoff with a low amount of fuel and with not much passengers just at Adelaide Airport. I don't know if it's true but i'll try out with fs9 (even if it's not correct)

i am pretty sure that i heard a while back that the Adl runway isn't capable of handling fully loaded 747's .. and that's even after the extension some years back!! not sure if this is true and not sure how much runway the A380's need in comparison to the 747's .. they really should have built Tapley's Hill Road to go under the runway .. would have had an extra couple hundred metres. Again, cheap arsed government decisions!!! Anyway, that was a long time ago!

Quick search from Wiki:

747 Takeoff run: 3,018m - 3,320m
380 Takeoff run: 2,750 - 2,900m

The 05/23 runway at Adelaide Airport has a length of 3,100m so it is long enough for the 380s to take off. However, I am not sure if the runway is wide enough at present to service the 380s.
