Just before now @ 2:50pm I heard loud reverse from my house. I don't know if it was the A380 or a 747. I'm keeping an eye on the webcam to see what comes in.

Edit: Probably 747, after about 20 mins, hasn't come past. You can't see the 747 gate on webcam

Great pic, I was there on Saturday and couldn't believe the amount of people alongside Harbourtown .. didn't even know this area of land existed for parking .. I felt I was heading to the footy and parking controller yelling at me "Go back, Go back" .. I was a bit over excited and tried to drive right up to the fence!!

Took about 20 mins just to get outta there but well done to whoever opened that space up to the public ... I laughed at the sign "A380 viewing carpark - FREE" ... no sh..t, how dare they even think of charging.

Why doesn't Qantas park the jet for 2 hours and offer people a look inside for say $50 for 10 minutes .. I would pay!!!

Thats because it is Massive! Its the 2nd biggest aircraft flying (by weight) in the world. The biggest is the Antonov Design Bureau AN-225 an there is only 1 of those flying.

To give you an idea on the A380's size, the diameter of the engines are roughly the same dimensions as the fusealage of a Embraer E-Jet (like the ones Virgin Blue fly). :shock:

was watching it land on Sunday night (just off Sth Rd) and it is very quiet, but a weird sound we could hear was a kind of mechanical/electircal noise every few seconds .. it would stop and start .. I guess that is maybe the flaps shifting position .. freaky hearing that rather then being drawn to a loud engine sound. They've now had one landing from the East (with big cross winds) and one from the West .. good practice for the pilots!! haha

Although the crowd of fans dwindles with each visit, when the A380 is there in the sky in front of you... it's still amazing !

Nice photos guys. I saw it sitting in the Sydney International terminal the other day, next to a few 747s. It doesn't put them to shame, but it is noticeably bigger!

LOW-COST airline Jetstar will start daily flights between Perth and Adelaide from February 2.

It also will start flying three times a week between Perth and Cairns.

Yesterday, Jetstar had special one-way fares of $69 between Perth and Adelaide for the announcement.

The airline's Adelaide services will grow to 47 weekly domestic return flights by February next year.

Jetstar chief executive officer Bruce Buchanan said the new services would leverage greater tourism opportunities for Perth, Adelaide and Cairns.

Adelaide Airport Ltd is planning for a series of major projects which could cost as much as $900 million over the next five years.

A new master plan for development at West Beach, following a 12-month review, will be released for public comment early next year.

The “concept plans’’ include at least two more boarding gates and expanded aircraft parking at the new T1 terminal, a multi-storey car park for about 2000 vehicles to replace the current inadequate facilities and a 200-room hotel on part of the car park site.

A changed roadway system would relocate taxi and hire car access to the terminal, and is likely to banish private vehicles from the front of the terminal under a new security regime. Also in the plan is a “plaza forecourt’’ in T1 to enhance the ground-level entrance, with such facilities as a restaurant and – possibly – a new home for the historic Vickers Vimy aircraft exhibit.

Meanwhile, the old domestic terminal would be demolished and part of the site used for temporary car parking ahead of its replacement with a new terminal to serve the growing number of resources industry charters and general aviation passengers. AAL, which has invested more than $450 million in capital works in its first 10 years, will fund most of the projects, but expects a hotel group or private developer to build the long-awaited airport hotel.

The new master plan will also provide for the relocation of freight companies and air cargo operations, as well as aircraft maintenance, to the eastern side of the airport, at the bottom of Richmond Road, and will seek to accommodate a corridor for a future light rail connection to the city.

While funding estimates cannot be finalised yet, the proposed projects are expected to cost about $900 million, with some work to start next year.

AAL general manager of corporate affairs John McArdle said the company’s board was yet to decide on funding and the work would require careful sequencing to ensure the impact on airport operations was minimised.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has given approval to negotiations with developers over the proposed hotel, and AAL has received several approaches from groups interested in the proposal. This would add to private investment of more than $200 million at the airport, including the $40 million IKEA store, the expanding Harbour Town shopping precinct (where a further 30 retail outlets and a Woolworths supermarket are being completed), and the new Burbridge Business Park offices and warehouses.

AAL estimates it has 200ha of surplus land at West Beach, while a recent State Government survey identified an industrial land bank of 75ha within the airport boundaries, and another 80ha at Parafield, which is controlled by AAL.

Projects have to be approved by the Federal Government, which owns the land, and AAL is obliged to consult with the State Government, even though it does not come under state planning controls. AAL – with UniSuper (38.5 per cent), Motor Traders Association of Australia super fund (28.35 per cent) and the Local Government Superannuation Board (16.16 per cent) as its major shareholders – took over a 50-year lease of Adelaide Airport and Parafield Airport in May 1998.

It celebrated its 10th anniversary with record revenue of $140.5 million for 2007-08, up from $126 million in the previous financial year, and an improved net profit of $8.4 million. Profit before tax rose from $4.84 million to $18.6 million as passenger numbers climbed another 7.5 per cent to 6.725 million.

When AAL gained the lease from the Commonwealth, annual passenger numbers were 3.98 million.

Managing director Phil Baker said despite the impact of record oil prices, Adelaide Airport had recorded strong growth in regional passenger traffic – up 15.4 per cent in the past year – while domestic traffic rose 6.8 per cent and international traffic 7.12 per cent.

The company expected further improvement this financial year, although not at the recent rapid rate. Growth was running about six years ahead of forecasts made five years ago, he said.

AAL‘s annual report shows income from aeronautical activities rose from $69.6 million to $75.4 million, commercial revenue was up from $23.9 million to $27.5 million and property revenue from $24.5 million to $27.4 million.

this is a massive vote of confidence in SA! An airport expansion is not a trivial matter, and would not be considered unless they truly believe in SA as a region of strong growth. Bring it on!!!
