i think something needs to be done with that intersection too

the space just doesnt quite work right....

i think the lantern also looks better from further away - but there isnt really any good places to view it from

mmm

Looks great hey? We are on the cusp of a new era in lighting our cities….I am experimenting with LEDs at home and am watching the market waiting for the prices to nose dive - as they will.

We should be able to power our homes and cities for maybe 1/10th the power we use today – instead of more power plants we can embrace the “nega-watt” – dramatically reducing consumption and in doing so decupling growth from carbon emissions.

Re the lantern, or even the ‘northern lights’, instead of “more of the same” I believe we should be turning our attention to the next innovative project…let’s push the boundaries!

My proposal is Hindley Street embracing LED lighting…the arts and culture corner of the city makes an artistic statement until sun rise, more people are attracted (making it safer), the street is sensationally well lit (making it safer again!), development potential is ignited and we have an iconic postcard precinct that is a must visit.

Let’s not say Rundle Lantern should be bigger or better and appreciate it for what it is – magnificent! Lets find the next project to lobby for to make Adelaide the City of Light respected the world over.

Good post, Clr Yarwood.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean about using LEDs to produce light though. They are very bright to look at, but do not actually throw a lot of light (unless you have 1000 of them), which is the reason they aren't being used in our homes. I looked into LED lighting for my home recently, and this was the reason I'm not doing it. Makes for great displays though! Also they're great for traffic lights, which you actually look at.
cheers,
Rhino

Super bright LED technology is already here, but not in commercial quantities.

Hopefully in 10 years or so they'll be cheap enough for everyone to have in their homes.

Not just cheap to buy, but cheap to run - at this stage they're still relatively inefficient for room lighting

"Bruno @ Sep 21st 2007 12:46PM
8 watts for 420 lumens. Great for an LED and a fine progression for a technology in its relative infancy.

But it's all about lumens per watt for general purpose and residential lighting, so while the output is remarkable for a small package, the energy consumption is still relatively high compared to many other technologies, including fluorescent.

Earlier this year some were celebrating the supposed rush of LEDs in the consumer space for general lighting. Sorry, not going to happen for quite a few years. Efficiency is not there and production costs are certainly not there yet. I still predict at least 5-10 years until LEDs make for a viable residential lighting solution."
cheers,
Rhino

Red Square is a classic example of how lights can attract attention and flair to a premises. That area stands out a mile away and looks awesome.

Totally agree about pushing the boundries, good to hear this coming from someone in the ACC and actually beleive it.

I posed this question a long time ago, but there was little response. :|

It seems that the work that Cnr Yarwood hinted at at the time was to cut down the two trees in front of Hungry Jacks and re-pave the footpath.

It there any development planned or being encouraged to capitalise on the spectacle that the Lantern is?

I think would be interesting having a webcam looking back from the lantern onto the edge of Rundle Mall with all the people staring at the lantern - haha!

If Victoria Square is going to undergo a massive overhaul, I'd hope that this would include some sort of integrated lighting display or innovative lighting of some sort. As the centre of the city, I'd like to see it lit up like a Christmas tree throughout the night to encourage activity there, and also make it a less daunting thoroughfare between King William Street south, Gouger Street and the CBD at night.
Something similar to the LED curtain that was suggested for Rundle Convergence would be an idea - would love to see a concept like that up and running somewhere.

I'm also still hooked on the superscreen idea... it's one thing I love about Melbourne... for the AFL Grand Final, major international soccer games, etc, there's nothing like the atmosphere there when you pack thousands of people into Fed Square. I'd love to see it emulated somewhere in Adelaide.
Obviously the screen in Elder Park didn't work for the Olympics, but given the location, weather, and the fact that the Olympics is a continuous 2 week event rather than a one off 2 or 3 hour fixture at a particular time, I don't think we should worry too much. The World Cup qualifier at Adelaide Oval a few years back shows there is demand there.

Perhaps instead of a superscreen, it'd be fantastic if we could be technologically innovative enough to come up with something completely original, like some sort of curtain of lights projected into the sky that is capable of screening a high resolution moving images? Who knows.
