Hired some movies friday night from the Video store on the corner there, and got a flyer that they are moving out at the end of september. They plan to be moved back in by end of 2009. Junction Centre revamp begins
BAY Junction Shopping Centre will start coming down this month, clearing the way for a $65 million redevelopment aimed at giving Glenelg a fighting chance with its retail competitors.
Owner-developer Andrew Taplin and the Jetty Road Main Street Board say the investment will help Glenelg to keep pace with the Marion and Harbour Town shopping complexes.
Demolition of the 1973 Bay Junction shops will begin on Monday, September 29, to be replaced with a modern centre inside 12 months on the Brighton Rd corner.
With the exception of Woolworths, existing traders have been told they must vacate by September 28. Many face uncertain futures (see separate story).
Included in the new complex will be 26 specialty shops and restaurants, a redeveloped Woolworths, gymnasium and 1000sq m of office space.
A three-deck 424 space carpark also will be built. “I think it’s exciting for Glenelg,” Mr Taplin said.
“The precinct is facing increased competition from other areas and we need to keep investing money in Glenelg to bring people here.”
Mr Taplin said Woolworths would temporarily close as part of the redevelopment but he was unsure when. Jetty Road Main Street Board chairman Bruce Grindlay said shopfronts along the strip needed to be constantly upgraded.
“We need to be continually upgrading the street and changing its face or else it can look tired,” Mr Grindlay said.
“We want tourists and visitors to come to the Bay, and they are not going to do that if starts to look a bit tired and rundown.”
Meantime, a $1 million upgrade of the Stamford Grand Hotel’s Grand Bar was completed last week.
A cafe adjoining the bar was razed to extend the bar area by 70sq m. Modern tiles, glass and colour schemes were added throughout the bar, which also received a new sound system. A small open-air smokers room was built.
Grand Hotel chief executive Sacha A’Bell said it was important to continue improving Jetty Rd.
“I think to attract people to Glenelg it’s important that we keep reinvigorating Jetty Rd, and the Stamford Grand needs to be a part of that.”

Sweet......... Things are starting to go ahead down at glenelg again after a bit of a quiet
period over the last couple of years.... We now have :
1) Adelphi Waters U/C
2) Latitude Approved and likely to be U/C next year
3) Bay junction redevelopment - demolition about to start.
4) the ferris wheel due to be in operation in October (2 years late)
Maybe we could start up a Glenelg Crane counter ?

Well I drove past yesterday and it looked like everything except Woolworths was closing down (as in the last day of trade was yesterday).
There were numerous removals vans around and lots of fixtures being removed from shops.
I had a closer look and the mall entry doors had several signs on them saying where stores were moving to.
There is a big sign at the corner of Jetty Rd and Brighton Rd saying "Woolworths - Open" so that seems to confirm Woolworths is probably now the only tenant.
I could be wrong but I reckon Woolworths will only stay open until their new store opens at Harbourtown, which can't be more than a month or so away by the look of it.
So yes, it does look like things are about to happen there.

I was right!
Construction fencing is now up and allstate demolition signs are on it. I might be wrong about Woolworths only staying open until the harbourtown one opens though because there are signs up on the front of Woolworths indicated it will stay open throughout the redevelopment work. There's also a floorplan of the new building on the front of Woolworths and it shows Woolworths basically staying where it is, but there will be a new mall in front of it (and the front wall of Woolworths will be removed so that it opens into the mall) so it looks like it will trade throughout the construction period.

Well demolition of the old Bay Junction shopping centre (except Woolworths) is now well underway. They didn't waste any time!
I'm guessing at this rate there'll be nothing much left by the end of next week.

Drove past today and all that's left apart from Woolworths and Woolworths liquor, and a little bit of the mall the stands between them, is part of an entrance tower type structure facing Jetty Road, and the larger, circular tower structure on the corner of Jetty Rd and Brighton Rd.
The rest of the centre is now just piles of rubble. Allstate certainly don't muck around. Maybe they should get into the construction game as well as demolition and we might get things built faster too.
Better yet, maybe we should put Allstate in charge of assessing and approving all development applications!

The Empire State Bldg in NY was built in 2 years in the Great Depression. (102 floors). Now that's speed! Before the girders from the mills had even cooled right down, they were being hoisted up into the building.
