IMO the sooner Harris Scarfe's goes the better - it's such a daggy store for the centre of a CBD. It's like they forgot to update (in a time warp) - appears like a rabbit warren inside - and super low rise to boot! We/they will definitely benefit from the new development.

ADELAIDE City Council has called a special meeting this afternoon to vote on a proposal to build a 19-storey tower in Rundle Mall.

The tower would replace the existing Harris Scarfe building and include a mix of retail and office space.

Final approval power rests with the State Government's Development Assessment Commission, which will decide on the proposal at a meeting on November 13.

The council owns the ground floor and basement of the land, which it uses for commercial parking under its subsidiary U-Park.

Some councillors are also expected to lobby to ask the DAC to demand the developers maintain the current facade.

The building is estimated to cost $150 million.

Council will also be asked to approve a 17-storey development on Flinders St at the 4pm meeting.

Planning officials have recommended approval of the office block, which would sit between the IAG building and the state heritage-listed Observatory House.

No... why don't the council lobby to keep this facade instead of harris scarfe one...i know which one i'd prefer

It's time we gave up Harris Scarf's facade. 2 floors in the CBD in Rundle St?! We are not a bush town :!: It's pothing of any value architecturally speaking IMO.

if they wanna keep the old facade the whole futuristic design will have to be scaled down to looking less futuristic so the facade doesn't look out of place, thus we will have just another ordinary building and nothing sensational cause nothing will have really changed...and i won't be surprised if the number of floors is reduced to 10 or less :x :roll:

I disagree. I really like mixes of modern and heritage styles of architecture.

Considering that the decision for this development is being undertaken by the DAC, you never know, they could just throw out the council requests and go ahead with the original proposal. Since this is the first major development that I can think of since the formation of the DAC, anything can happen.

I disagree. I really like mixes of modern and heritage styles of architecture.
I also do, but I think the Grenfell facing Façade isn't worth saving as it's just a framework. Some of the Rundle facing façade is worth it, and that would be a good side to set back the high part of the building to lessen the canyon effect in the Mall. But at the same time I wouldn't be sad to see it go.

Go-ahead for $150m store plan

ADELAIDE City Council has approved a $150 million development on the Harris Scarfe site in the city.

At a special council meeting last night, the 19-storey tower was given the green light by a majority of councillors.

The development – which still has to gain State Government approval – will include four floors of Harris Scarfe retail space and offices.

While the Harris Scarfe building, which was built in 1922 and is not heritage listed, will be demolished, the council may consider paying the developer, Alteman, to retain the current facade.

However, Lord Mayor Michael Harbison would not speculate on a "fair price".

"Council is saying, if possible, they'd like the developers to retain some of the character of the area," he said. "The idea was floated that council might offer some incentives for the retention of some of these facades, but that comes down the track a bit."

The business, which began in the 1860s, now has 27 stores.

"The prospect of a new Harris Scarfe store in the centre of the city is very exciting," Mr Harbison said.

"With a 19-storey office building on top of it, it really is a great opportunity to bring even more life to South Australia's premier retail precinct."

Final approval power rests with the State Government's Development Assessment Commission, which will decide at a meeting on November 13.

A conflict of interest resulting from Adelaide City Council's ownership of part of the site meant it could not rule on the final development approval.

Also last night, the council approved a 17-storey office tower for Flinders St.

The proposal will replace a four storey building beside the state heritage-listed Observatory House.

I welcome the approval of this exciting proposal, however I support the council's call to protect the Rundle Mall façade of Harris Scarfe. The 4 level 'tower' fronting Rundle Mall is an attractive interwar stripped classical design which I think should be preserved.

I do not want future generations to condemn us for destroying such a structure, in the same manner we condemn those who destroyed the old Myer building in 1988.
