I would support perhaps changing the name of a few of the streets.



Some of the streets are named after irrelevant people. And although we all love tradition, I think their would be some merit in changing the crappy street names to ones that are reflective on our States history as well as our Nations history.


Names such as Monash, Barton, Hughes, those blokes who invented penecillen, Dunstan or maybe even a South Australian sports star.


As I said, I love history but some of the names are irrevelant, and we do need to change (remember we want to stop backward thinking).

Victoria Square --> Chris Knight's Place

Oh, typical. Only Fitzy in the whole of Adelaide could have trouble remembering the main street names - that guy is an absolute dumb shit - excuse my language, but even thats understating what he really is. Why do the people of Adelaide continue to glorify him?

It's not that freaking hard...

North Terrace
Hindley > Rundle
Currie > Grenfell
Waymouth > Pirie
Franklin > Flinders
Grote > Wakefield
Gouger > Angus
Halifax, Carrington, Sturt... and some others in between there... they're not really important streetsat the moment so who needs to remeber those?
South Terrace.
As for east >< west - West Terrace, Morphett, King William, Pulteney, Frome, Hutt, East Terrace.
Not to mention people should know basics like Gawler Place, the 5 squares - Victoria, Hurtle, Hindmarsh, Light and Whitmore. Wellington is the one in North Adelaide, the tram stops in the city, and notable landmarks like Art Gallery, Town Hall, GPO, Chinatown, Central Markets, Westpac House, UniSA and Adelaide Uni. Its all simple geography really, at least thats what I would expect of those who know me.

Not naming and shaming, but I've come across someone who didn't know where Victoria Square is.

If I can know these after leaving Adelaide 22 years ago, anyone can.

As for Vic sq- a probable product of changing it's name - the less confusion the better if no net gain is to be made. Imagine if half the street names changed!

guys, just briefly walking up a bit of Rundle Mall yesterday and today, I was cringing with embarrasment of how loud the city council has made the annoying xmas carrols blaring out of those speakers. arrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh. Please, turn them down, its meant to be a sophisticated pedestrian mall, not the magic cave. It just felt so tacky, and I hate carrols too, sorry!

Queen Adelaide atleast was someone notable. We were a British colony after all. And I am proposing changing the name of a street/s. not an entire city.


Some of the street names are irrelevant. Just because something is 'old' doesn't mean it shouldn't be changed. I think it would be brilliant to see a Barton street or Monash street.

No. But good on Melbourne for having street names that are relevant.

Barton was our first prime minister, Monash was our greatest General, Stuart even could become a street name (atleast he survived the journey!)

and it was difficult enough when they changed Burbridge rd to Sir Donald Bradman Drive, which had me scratching my head as to why they named the main road to the airport after a crikiter when the the road could have been re-named to Sir Richard Williams Drive

There's already Barton Tce in North Adelaide.

The majority of Adelaide and North Adelaide's streets were named after figures in the founding of the colony. Quite fitting I think.

Renaming streets causes a lot of unnecessary confusion and expense. Something we would be best to avoid unless a pressing need for a renaming popped up.

it's a shame that Melbourne is not the capital city of Batmania! named after john batman - the founder of victoria. Imagine the state song: Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Batmania!!! (sung like the original batman tv theme)

There was an article in the Advertiser this morning about removing portions of the sandstone wall around Govt House so everyone can see the house/gardens/etc. I could not find it online though...

ADELAIDE City Council has voted to knock down part of the wall surrounding Government House and put the historic building on show.

Members voted 5-3 last night to demolish half of the 1.8m-high sandstone wall surrounding the grounds and erect a see-through security fence inside.

The council rejected a recommendation to cut "viewing slits" into the wall, which has already been supported by the State Government and the Government House and Grounds Committee.

The wall is a State Government asset and it has the final decision.

Councillor Anne Moran said her preference was to completely demolish the wall but reducing it by half was a reasonable compromise.

"I consider that option of the viewing slits to be awful . . . that we go and peep in at the big people in the big house and tell our children `that's where the Governor lives'," she said.

"I felt that what we really wanted to do was open the vistas. Slits certainly didn't do that.

"This way we still retain the look of the sandstone wall but anyone walking down Prince Henry Gardens can look at the beautiful view of Government House, which is, after all, the heritage item.

"The wall is made to look like a heritage wall but it really isn't, so it's not as valuable as one may think. Government House and the grounds belong to the people of South Australia, and it was meant to be viewed."

The council considered options including building a full-height palisade fence or open-rail fencing re-using historic panels.

Councillor Michael Henningsen, along with Ralph Clarke and Deputy Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood, voted against the half-wall option.

"This is really becoming an old chestnut now, and reviewing the options before us, the recommendation from the administration and the experts in the field, was that we go with option one (viewing slits)," Mr Henningsen said.

"I don't feel that it's our role as councillors to re-design things.

"I think it's our role to take the advice of the experts."
