Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
I just made the mistake of reading some of the AdelaideNow reader comments about the tram line extension
Personally i think this is a fantastic development and i'm glad it's going ahead irrespective of the economic crisis.

and yes, we shouldnt just shut up shop every time we head into recession. life goes on and infrastructure will be cheaper now than later on.
i dont care much for the park n ride idea. i'd like to know who'll take advantage of that. that might encourage more people to drive in than less, but they probably needed it to make the business case stack up for the immediate future.
long term though, i think its an investment well made and should help develop the precinct and facilitate the viability of its existing assets such as the Ent Centre and the Soccer stadium (which will seem more like a true inner city venue once a tram runs down there)

Keep the heavy rail vs light rail vs buses debates in the appropriate threads, please.
I'd like to know if the turn right lane into the Convention Centre car park will be removed so the short one-track section may be duplicated. You would think that section under the Morphett Street Bridge will become a serious bottleneck otherwise.
As for the park-and-ride... what's the point?

Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
I agree with you. If they were to build a park and ride there, about 2 or 3km out of the city, surely most people will go there, intending on parking there, then they will see how close they are to the city and just not be bothered catching the tram and drive in instead. Silly really.AtD wrote:As for the park-and-ride... what's the point?
Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
everyone seems to have forgotten that our 1st large TOD will be built on the old Clipsal site, near the Entertainment Centre. This extension is the 1st part of getting it to Hindmarsh, to then meet up with the existing Outer Harbour line (for the future 2nd stage hybrid thingos) and to possibly extend further into the heart of Brompton/Bowden TOD, similar to how Melb has made tram extensions into the docklands development.
Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
From your friends at AdelaideNow - this is so true I cant believe a tramline would be proposed next to a train line
And to think - $100m could be spent on a couple of grade separated interchanges - IMAGINE! a grade separated Port Rd/South Rd intersection :O now there is a novel idea.
Could someone please explain to me why we need a tram line down the middle of Port Road - and to the entertainment centre...... Let me tell you why I am so confused. There is a perfectly good train line that goes to Bowden... from the city and.... its not that far to walk to the Entertainment Centre (between 8 & 10 minutes). Could someone also explain to me why we would need it extended further to Semaphore? When AGAIN there is a perfectly good train line that goes to Glanville AND it's about an 8-10 minute walk to the beach. Unless of course the government is planning to cancel the train line altogether and replace it with the tram, only problem with that is - the new trams wouldn't cope with the amount of people on the Outer Harbour to Adelaide line during peak time. They'd need to be bigger or more frequent. So - could someone tell me why we can't electrify and extend the current lines if they are so hell bent on electrification and making a mess of Semaphore? Shouldn't that take priority?

Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
raulduke, can you do some basic research into the long term proposal for the north-western line corridor. There are many pages on here about it.
Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
the government are notorious for 'planning studies', 'long term proposals', 'setting agendas' and establishing 'frameworks' all flimsy non commital statements.

"Don't build it because too many people will want to use it and it won't be able to cope" - what a stupid argument!raulduke wrote: only problem with that is - the new trams wouldn't cope with the amount of people on the Outer Harbour to Adelaide line during peak time. That's going to happen too. Look at what's been proven with public transport around the world - light rail is cheaper to run than heavy rail, the vehicles are cheaper to buy, and they can turn on to street trackage as a bonus. Because they are cheaper to run, for the same cost you can run more frequent services. If you run more frequent services, patronage increases because the frequent services suit more people.raulduke wrote:So - could someone tell me why we can't electrify and extend the current lines if they are so hell bent on electrification and making a mess of Semaphore? It's a waste of inner city land, and a waste of taxpayer's dollars.deano91 wrote:I agree with you. It's no different to encouraging people to drive to the CBD in peak hours, except they're telling them to stop at a point 3km from the CBD and take a tram in.

Do you think if we made Adelaide's trains and stations new and shiny, but didn't really fix the frequency / bogans who use it / etc that it would bring in more patronage? Stuff electrification, we just need to polish those poxboxes, put in nicer seats and use glossy paint at Kudla Station.Cruise wrote:The tramline will be a raging success for one idiotic reason, It will be new and shiny. I thought they were going to use the existing Adelaide Entertainment Centre carpark, not build a new one. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

They are using existing entertainment centre carparking space [land required for this purpose anyway].crawf wrote:Somebody wrote:I agree with you. If they were to build a park and ride there,

Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
For traffic comming from the north/west & outer harbour; that last stretch of driving from the entertainment centre into the city during peak hour, let alone trying to find/ pay for parking - the park-and-tramride will be an attractive and effective option.deano91 wrote:I agree with you. More such city satallite sites would work a treat on calming cbd peak hour traffic and carparking woes- which in turn would help buses get out of the city quicker - which in turn would attract more patronage due to better trip times which would aleviate traffic/ parking further.
Also lets not forget this is stage 1 of 2 of linking up to the outer harbour train line aswell (I think this has been mentioned by someone else already).
Re: #Proposed : Port Adelaide Tram Line
Some further updates and details about the tramline have now been released by the DTEI. It looks as if that Port Road will be widened slightly along the parklands as well as the Port Road bridge over the rail lines so the number of road traffic lanes can remain either the same or similar while the tramline will have it's own tram lanes or reserve running. Tram stop locations have also been identified.
