Re: Broadband of Choice in Adelaide?
Australian broadband users subsidise the US's unlimited broadband.
We pay for traffic across the Pacific that they get "free" by pure virtue that the source of that traffic is on their virtual doorstep. This is why I view TPG's current promotions with a great deal of scepticism -- there just isn't that much room to move.
Edgar: It may be unlimited by name, but it's greatly limited by the speed. Which amounts to the same thing as a quota.

I am not interested in that unlimited offer, but just merely stunt by their unlimited broadband offers.
Surely the speed are so 2002 however it's about time Australian starts benefiting from unlimited downloads! Back in the early-to-mid 2000s when broadband was first introduced in Asia, they were all unlimited, regardless of the plan you're on.
You pay a fixed monthly fee for your broadband connection, and you can download as much as you possibly could, those was when almost every household with broadband connection have their PCs switched on 24/7.
Even to this day, they are still unlimited.

Re: Broadband of Choice in Adelaide?
The reason they have unlimited access is because the majority of their traffic comes from within either their own country, or that general area, which is heavily linked with fibre.
The vast majority of our traffic comes from overseas, and hence has to get here via fibre owned by what is essentially a duopoly, hence high prices.
You just can't go 'oh that country has unlimited broadband, why can't we have it!' - Australia is in a vastly different situation.

Why can't we? Who would have thought we would one day be paying a fixed monthly fee and get unlimited mobile calls?darksidelemm wrote:The reason they have unlimited access is because the majority of their traffic comes from within either their own country, or that general area, which is heavily linked with fibre.

See the Optus Timeless Mobile Plans (and where Virgin and TPG follow suit)? Not many carriers in the world has had the ability to introduce similar plans. If we can do that on the mobile, we could offer than on the broadband too.
It's just a matter of being competitive. Thinking that Australia has to be excluded from enjoying all the luxuries other countries have due to its geographical factors are a little unfair.

You've completely missed the point Edgar - the majority of the content we, in Australia, access comes from the USA. Where as people in other countries mostly look at locally served content. A lot of it is to do with the language barrier.Edgar wrote:Why can't we? Even Sensational-Adelaide was hosted in the US until the server move. I forget where we are now?
We have to pay for the traffic to come across the Pacific.

IP-TV, especially with HD offerings, is the big bandwidth hog of the future. Over here Netflix allows you to stream movies, i.e. online movie rental. That works as an all-you-can-eat subscription, so you can imagine how much people could consume with a setup like that.Cruise wrote:Honestly, what do you download?

Youtube, downloading UKTV, pressing refresh on S-A 20 times a second... it all adds up.
