To be honest I'm somewhat bemused by the number of times I see people on this forum say that things should be built in the CBD, especially on the railyards.

I'm not too sure how big these railyards are, but I doubt that it's big enough to fit the new hospital, new casino, new stadium and now the new swimming centre on.

I could be wrong but I doubt it!

Not forgetting that we already have a perfectly good aquatic centre near the CBD anyway.

I for one say there's absolutely nothing wrong with spreading major developments into the suburbs, as long as it's done strategically and sensibly.

Having everything in the CBD would make no sense and lead to unbelievable traffic congestion, and of course lifeless, boring suburbs.

Marion is easy to get to from most parts of Adelaide and is already a big retail and entertainment hub, so it's a good location for the swimming centre (if it ever gets built which I'm still doubting I'm afraid!)

Agreed! A lot of Adelaide people have no idea how easy it is to get around this city! I suppose it all depends on what you're used to, but it certainly is very easy to get around Adelaide thanks to good urban planning and an excellent road network.

Contrary to what a lot of Adelaide people seem to think, we also have one of the best public transport systems in the world. Anyone who doesn't think so just needs to try commuting somewhere else for a few weeks!

To quote a US Politician, It's the 'Entertainment Precint' stupid (something like that anyways) and yep, there's plenty of land there for a complete EP (esp if you include the adelaide gaol district).

There'd be no need for sarcasm. West Lakes couldn't be much easier to get to. It merely 20 minutes down Port Road from the CBD!

I think a great location for such a facility would be the Gouger Street/West Terrace Post Office site.

It is an embarassment. That sign has been up for 9 years and still nothing has actually happened. Most places in the world would have had it planned, approved, and built and opened within 2 years MAX!

As you say, let's just get it built. It's not like nobody knows how to build a swimming pool! It's not even as though they're proposing a particularly impressive design. It's just a basic ordinary pool so let's just either get it built or forget about it!

I think that idea probably has a lot of merit really. It would satisfy those who say the major swimming facility should be near the CBD, and they could even perhaps make it a combined serious competition swimming centre and family waterpark, with the addition of some decent flumes, wave machines and rapids etc.

Personally though I think Adelaide is big enough to support at least 2 major swimming centres.

That is of course providing that everyone chooses to travel by car, which won't happen due to the fact that it is the central business district and nearly all public transport goes there (particularly the area around North Terrace... )

That's all well and good (lived in St Mary's for nearly 10 years, so I'm well aware of Marion's impact), but if we're going to build a State Aquatic Centre, wouldn't it be more logical to build it in the Central Business District. That's where nearly all public transport leads, therefore meaning that there will be less cars on the road, thus reducing pollution. Aren't we striving to become a 'Green City' Building an Aquatic Centre at Marion where nearly everyone will use cars, thus creating more pollution is nearly as ridiculous as my dad having to drive 60, 000 km on our car in 4 years, yet at the same time we are being told to use public transport and be 'greener'.
