Re: [] News: Adelaide City Council
I have one thing to say to those whining about music festivals in the city parklands, GET A LIFE!
The parklands are not only for you to walk your dogs without a leash. They belong to the people of this state, and unfourtuantely for you this includes tens of thousands of young people who attend these festivals.
If you don't like the sound of music, then take the opportunity to go on a short trip somewhere. These events do not go on for more then a day/night anyway.
Thats the problem in this state, the minority whiners only think of them selves.
Btw, We Love Sounds is coming up June 8. Don't know location yet(secret)..but two of the biggest DJ's will be here, Armin Van Buren and Arman Van Helden.

Though I am older than most of you, I agree that the CBD is a place that is expected to be noisy and full of life. As a blues rock guitarist I have no trouble with volume. I acknowledge also that people of all ages live here and have equal access to public spaces. We must be careful of exhibiting intolerance while infering others are intolerant. There are ways of solving things.

I thought that's where they had it last year and that 2009 would be in a different location!mooshie wrote:at this stage We Love Sounds is at the shores. apparently if ticket sales surpass 2500 it will be in a big marquee somewhere.....

Was that held at the same park that Soundwave was held at? My shoes were full of dirt after that concert, so I would imagine that the park wouldn't have recovered by the Future Music Fetival...SRW wrote:I feel like I'm still coughing up dirt...Brando wrote:I thought that's where they had it last year and that 2009 would be in a different location!mooshie wrote:at this stage We Love Sounds is at the shores. apparently if ticket sales surpass 2500 it will be in a big marquee somewhere.....

I'm fairly sure Soundwave was one of the festivals in Bonython Park that Clr Plumridge took issue with. Future Music was in Rundle and Rymill Parks, with the Garden of Unearthly Delights.peas_and_corn wrote:Was that held at the same park that Soundwave was held at? Mainstreet National Conference
I was lucky enough to attend the National Mainstreet Conference in Fremantle last week; here are some critical issues for the future of our mainstreets:
Back to the Future - The move towards localised communities and away from big box shopping centres is gaining momentum.
The big ‘retro’ trend - Restoring laneways as per the magnificent work of the City of Melbourne’s Rob Adams.
Support the rise of authenticity and diversity - All over Great Britan local businesses are being pushed out by retail franchises that result in the cloning of mainstreets. We need to support small business that keep dollars local.
Mental Speedbumps – People should replace urban design and engineering as the most important element to making a Mainstreet real.
“Business Improvement Districts” – are needed to coordinate mainstreet planning, marketing, cleaning and more to compete with shopping centres.
Mainstreet 2011 – 8 Adelaide councils will work together to bring 400 national and international experts to Adelaide – watch this space!

Bonython Park is to be used for Music in the Park from 4 to 11pm on Friday 17 April. Council understands that many
Nth Adelaide residents are distressed by the excessive and prolonged noise from such events; strict noise controls will be
enforced and residents will be letter-boxed in a wider area than in the past. It is worth noting that this event will cater
for 5000 patrons paying over $90 each. The organiser will walk away with over $400,000 and pay Council a paltry
$2500 fee! Such an event in my opinion is of little or no value to the city so why should our residents have to put
up with it? This is the 5th all-day musical event inflicted on Bonython Park this season. Some say this is at least 3
too many. I will vote against any future events that run for more than 4 hours in Bonython Park and I will move to
have sound monitoring done by a professional engineer employed by the Council and at the organisers expense
Plumridge, you are a councillor in our CAPITAL city, our CBD. And your complaining about noise from a music festival. Grow up mate, think outside the square and realise this is why the ACC has very little credibility, you dont relate to the youth at all (Yarlwood the exception, not the rule).
Re: [] News: Adelaide City Council
Get real James - your attitude is part of the problem!
I respect your views and the people you claim to represent but telling people to go away to escape the noise is just not reasonable . Incidentally, I have supported many events in all parts of the city and will continue to do so as long as the organisers show some respect for the lifestyle choices of others.
Excessive noise for the best part of 12 hours straight is unreasonable if it occurs too often in the same place and believe me it is not only oldies who complain about the noise.
On a positive note, the Fringe and GoUD all went well over a 4 weeks period including the music festival on the holiday Monday in the East Park Lands with no complaints, so it can be done. If both sides are reasonable I reckon we can get a win/win outcome for all.
Incidentally, I'm surprised that you choose to live in the quiet old hills rather than in the buzzing city. And you talk about ACC having no credibility!
David Plumridge.

Re: [] News: Adelaide City Council
It's great that this issue is getting some attention in Australia. Mainstreet is vital! I had never thought about it too much before coming to the US, but living here has shocked me out of my ignorance (and it sounds like things are pretty bad in the UK too).Clr Yarwood wrote:Mainstreet National Conference

In America, they are spending a lot of time talking about the effect that the financial meltdown on Wall Street is having on "mainstreet" (due to credit drying up for small business). But really, it looks to me like Wall Street was already hurting mainstreet long before the financial crisis started - Wall Street financed corporations taking over just about any retail opportunity you can name. Stockholders need to see constant growth, resulting in these chains mushrooming all over the US. They dominate the market by having lots of outlets and cover practically every need. Thus, categories of small business that we enjoy in Australia are quite uncommon here (for example, butchers, newsagents, bakeries, greengrocers, florists, delis).
In my opinion, America has lost a great deal of its character and diversity due to misguided, over-the-top "growth". Though a beautiful country, it seems a shadow of what it could be, or maybe of what it once was. I've driven through loads of states and finding a "real" town is a cause for excitement amongst the big-box/strip mall/regional mall, fast food, chain restaurant, carpark landscapes that dominate too many American towns.
It's imperative that Australia learn from the lessons playing out in US and UK. We need to do all we can to support our small businesses and mainstreets. Many people in America are waking up to the mistakes made (especially in the face of the GFC, which seems to be putting the spotlight on business practices of the last few decades). But I'm not sure how they could start to unravel what they have created here, even if they want to.
In Australia, we really must make sure we keep our eyes wide open to the choices we are making (as individuals and as a society). I'm so very glad to hear that there is going to be a mainstreet conference in Adelaide. Let's get talking about this super important issue!
Sorry for ranting, I feel pretty strongly over this subject

about an hour ago, I was walking under the town hall clock tower and a TV crew were interviewing mayor Harbison. As I was walking past I heard harbo say "this will bring a marked change in Adelaide's skyline"
What was he talking about? Anyone know of any big news
