In some ways that location would perhaps not be absolutely ideal, in that it's not all that prominent, but if the casino itself was good enough then people would go to it anyway regardless of where it is. Take Jupiters casino as an example. It's nowhere near Brisbane CBD and it's not even in the centre of Surfers Paradise. However it's still fine where it is because people travel there specifically to go to Jupiters. It also helps that it is right next to a major shopping centre.
Brisbane has its own large casino right in the heart of its CBD - the Treasury casino. Its in a nice old building too, like ours.

Dont ever take the casino out of the CBD. Just look at Perth. The Burswood casino is about 2-3km away from the CBD and is a dive of a place. The resort thing is OK, but the Perth people hate the fact its not in the CBD caus it takes some nightlife out of Perth city which is wrong. The only reason why its busy is because of WA's pokie ban blocks anyone in the whole state from having any gambling other than Burswood

I've just realised something that should have been obvious to us all. If it's a 10 year plan, well obviously as I said they can't use the site of the new "marj" hospital because that is already earmarked for the hospital. However in 10 years time there will be another large vacant site, and it will be in the CBD.

I'm referring of course to the site of the current royal adelaide hospital. A perfect location for a casino!

Something makes me wonder if this 'threat' to move is a political play against the heritage rules in the Railway Station building.

The casino operators would need to be confident that they could transfer the casino licence to a different premises, if
they are considering moving. I'm not sure they would want the hassle.

"casino" means the premises defined in the casino licence as the premises to which the licence relates;

Surely that's a moot point. The license and any relevant legislation could be changed easily enough.

I was under the impression that the state gov wanted to return some of the land on the currant RAH back to parklands...
Personally I like the idea of a mixed entertainment/casino/hotel/sporting precinct over the railway yard site!

But isn't the railyard site where the hospital is going?

I personally think, if I had the choice, I'd build the new hospital on part of the clipsall site, build the casino on the railyards and make the old hospital land part parkland, part apartments set amid bike paths, parks, playgrounds and cafes

I believe it was Pistol that told us in the previous page about the intentions of Skycity and below is the evidence.

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/stor ... 82,00.html
Plans for Skycity casino to move from heritage site
ADELAIDE casino owner Skycity Entertainment Group has revealed its hand on a move from the heritage-listed railway station site.

The company shelved a $30 million underground carpark development last year – a plan which would have cost the company $75,000 per parking space.

Your say: Where should the casino go – and what should replace it?

Adelaide general manager David Christian said relocation talks were yet to start with the site's owner, the State Government, but plans would take 18 months to two years to realise.

"That's something we may look at but it's nothing more than conceptual at this stage . . . to move we would need to have government approval and have to work very closely with them," Mr Christian said.

"As our chief executive (Nigel Morrison) has said, Adelaide should deserve a bigger casino."

He said Adelaide was the only capital city casino without a hotel as part of the complex, another reason to relocate.

"Of course we've got the Hyatt next door which is fantastic," he said.

Mr Christian gave no hints on any potential new home for the casino because the talks were only at the conceptual stage.

Plans for 400 car parks off Station Place cleared their final hurdle with Adelaide City Council in April, 2008, but the project was canned soon after – one of Mr Morrison's first major decisions after his March, 2008 appointment.

The company already had decided to turn around Adelaide's poor performing operations when it took down the "for sale" sign in late 2007 – despite three offers.

The casino was a star performer of the Skycity group in the December half, lifting group earnings by 18.3 per cent to $14.2 million.

Property Council executive director Nathan Paine said the iconic building would have "no problem" attracting another tenant if the casino relocated.

Skycity owns Skycity Darwin and three casino/hotels in NZ.

Very interesting news indeed.

At a guess, the possible new location for the casino could form part of the 'Riverside' development alluded to by Denny Crane in the 'Spire' thread. ie between the new RAH and the Torrens...

Not between, but instead of. Didn't someone say it was the preferred site a page back? 8)

How about a casino complex on the current RAH site including bars and restaurants facing the botanic gardens.

to top it off, a 5-star hotel (similar to Crown Casino's 3rd hotel)

Anyway its good to hear Skycity is going to relocate, it will open the door for the railway station to be transformed into a retail and entertainment mecca (including the existing bars and restaurants)

I'm glad to hear they're continuing plans to move. I've never been comfortable with having a casino in that location.

I understand they're looking for a purpose-built facility, but I again put forward the Sir Samuel Way Building as an option (providing it were vacated, of course). Failing that, somewhere in the vicinity of Victoria Square would be good.

I have never been a fan of the casino but the only thing I am really interested in is what will happen now to the Adelaide Railway station? Would TransAdelaide / Department of Transport move back in? Or would it be ruined internally to became another boring shopping centre?

24th April SkyCity Adelaide is branding itself as the Adelaide Casino - once again.
This coincides with the finish of the new internal fitout and new uniforms.
Why take away the SkyCity out of their name?
Is a sale back on the cards?
Adelaide is the best performing casino in the southern hemisphere atm with the only positive six month figures to date.
