I completely agree with the idea that the Rundle Street market is completely unsustainable in its current form.

The major problem with the market, and I have written this before, is that it lacks the spontanaivety which makes such ventures succesful. At the moment the market looks sterile and planned.

The market would attract much more people if:

1. All the stalls did not look the same (the ACC should allow stallholders to supply their own shade and umbrellas)

2. The ACC imposed less restrictions on the type of stalls permitted. The last time I visited the market I was surprised by the amount of stalls selling 'new-age alternative jewelery'. I particularly loved the Salamanca Markets and the markets held at the Rocks in Sydney. The big difference is that those markets give the vibe of being big community garage sales. We should allow stalls where people can come and sell bric a brac and curios, as well as second hand things such as vintage clothing.

3. There should be more live music

And I think it is sad that the council cannot find the money to fund an event that if done properly would attract people to the city. I say it is sad, because the council appears to have the money to place wind mills and other 'green' gimmicks on top of buildings which in reality are more for propaganda as oppossed to actually saving the world.

Why not have the market in Hindmarsh Sq. Would be alot nicer place to walk around and chill.

The Rundle Street Market has about as much ambiance as a concrete car park.

I have heard though, that the Gilles Street market is much better in terms of atmosphere.

Clr Moran has had nothing to do with the idea or issue.

I think that she is pretty keen to speak her mind on every issue that pops up, wether it be good bad or indifferent. The media obviously gravitate towards her because of it. At least we here on SA know who is pulling wieght. Maybe you should get a media advisor

I would if I could afford it! The irony of being on council is that it pays $15k a year yet takes up about 30 hours a week if you do your job properly.

I might know a bit about cities but media is a totally different ball game!

Hi all, I’m providing an update as I will be a little quiet for the next 2-3 weeks.

My wife Emily is due this Thursday – it’s an exiting time as we don’t know if we are having a boy or a girl. With only days to go we are very ready; it feels like Christmas only much more random.

I have 2 MBA exams in the next 2 weeks; Marketing should be a breeze but Accounting will be a challenge. With a baby around the corner it makes it that bit trickier!

The Budget will be passed in a couple of weeks for public consultation so there is much going on behind the scenes – I am pushing on some big things like:

• Funding for Vic Square;
• Upgrading Gawler Place – our laneway with the greatest potential;
• Supporting the Rundle Mall Subsidiary;
• Privatising the Rundle Street Markets at a saving $300k/year;
• Funding for a Community Garden in city south; and
• Investigating a new management system for the central market as visitor numbers are going backwards.

Issues you guys are interested in like population growth and building heights are locked in now for a serious crack 2010/11 and I am hoping the State Government will come to the table on North Tce so we can go the next stage.

I’m also pushing hard on some basics like:

• Cigarette butt littering – more bins and better enforcement;
• Street Cleaning – more money for targeted cleaning;
• Business sustainability grants – cutting power bills for small business;
• Motorbike parking opportunities; and
• Street recycle bins – finally!

I dont know where to write this so just chose here again.



I go to town pretty reguarly on saturday night, being young and just starting uni. And I think there is a massive problem. You have thousands of people drinking down in the city, yet only a handful of public toilets around the place.


I dont know if there is any way to address it, or if any other cities have tried to fix a problem like this. But it is quiet disgusting sometimes walkind down sidestreets and it reeking of urine and vomit.


A rough idea would be to perhaps have portable toilets situated along Hindley, Rundle. Put a small charge on the late night traders?

Its not as if they arent making a killing anyway on their ridiculous entry fees and watered down drinks.

That possibly says more about the condition of the patrons than the availability of toilets. Every venue has loos, plus there's several council provided toilets in the Hindley and Rundle street areas.

The trouble being you only need a pee once you leave the nightclub and enter the chilly evening air. Also the doof-doof music in the nightclub partially suppresses your bodies ability to notice it needs to go!

Maybe the clubs could play 'running water' sounds every few minutes?

I think a regulation needs to be put in place about the ratio of toilets available to the venue's capacity. Let's say if the ratio is set to 1 toilet for 20 people [1:20] Then a venue of 140 capacity should provide 7 toilets each for males and females.

Currently I know of venues around that have capacities of over 100 that have 1 toilet!

Finally indeed! For a state that prides itself on its recycling credentials, it's disappointing that public recycling bins are pretty much absent. It'd be great to have at least the ACC start deploying them, perhaps in the form of the three reciprocal system I've seen elsewhere -- paper/bottles & cans/general refuse. Good news.

They're not needed any more. In fact, it won't be long until recycle bins are redundant. The process of sorting recycling has been industrialised and up-scaled dramatically, and most importantly: outsourced. Companies pay good money (or least they did when metal prices were high) for the right to go though your garbage!

The City of Tea Tree Gully subscribes to this system, I'm lead to believe.

...and what about the homeless people who scour the cbd bins for 10c cans? it's their income! you can almost set your clock by their frequency at each bin.
