Bus Stop 1 on Port Road (near the Gaol) will be closed from Tuesday until "September 2009", according to the Adelaide Metro website.

Some scaffolding type stuff was being put up in the space between the two road decks under the Port Road rail bridge today, I assume it is to hold up the beginnings of the new tram line section of the bridge. I noticed it on my way in to uni. Also, they've got some got awful banner now on the fence of the railyards, visible from the train, saying something like "this is going to be the site of Adelaide's new world class hospital" with a huge artist's impression on it. Seems the government are pretty damn keen on this stupid hospital...

Got a few photos of the bridge work on Port Road today. Because of the light rain today, I only got three photos of the bridge work to prevent damaging the camera (it stopped raining long enough for me to get the shots). Road works along North Terrace are still continuing with grading work now being undertaken.

One side of both the Belair (left) and Noarlunga Centre (right) lines has been blocked off because of the bridge work with a pile of ballast and a stop board set up. All train services are running as normal otherwise (although it does help that the Belair line has been completely shut down for most of it's route because of a track rebuild).

SIX trams built for use in the Spanish city of Madrid are instead headed for Adelaide as part of a $36 million fleet deal announced today by Transport Minister Pat Conlon.
The trams were built for Madrid transport group MINTRA for a major light rail project but were deemed surplus to requirements when the project was scaled back because of the global recession.

Mr Conlon said the $6 million cost for each tram was around the same as buying them new, but the deal would help solve capacity problems a lot quicker than ordering new trams and waiting for them to be built.

The low floor trams are being shipped over from Madrid and, after minor modifications, will go into full service in the Christmas/New Year period.

"It's been a great saving in time," he said. "We were looking at increasing capacity in the short term and we thought wed have to do that with slightly older trams so were really pleased. It's bad news for Spain but it's good new for Adelaide."

He said the trams had been built for Madrid's hot climate and the air conditioning was "as good as it gets".

Mr Conlon said the trams were "for all intents and purposes brand new" and five of the trams had never left the depot, and one had been used for just two weeks.

The Alstom Citadis 302 trams hold 186 passengers each, which is a slight increase on the existing fleets' 170 person capacity.

The State Government also intends to purchase 50 new electric trains and an unspecified number of new trams in 2012, he said.

Premier Mike Rann said the trams were a very good buy.

"These trams can each carry more passengers than our current trams and will provide extra capacity during the busy morning and evening peaks on the Glenelg and City West tramline," he said.

I dont mind the look of the current trams, but the new ones will look even better IMO.

These are basically the same as some of the newer ones operating in Melbourne.

excellent news, but I went on one of those 3 car citadis things in Melb last week, and it was swaying around like a snake despite being on a straight stretch of track.

These longer ones from Madrid should be better though

Can someone tell me the exact route of the extended line? Is it continuing down the middle of N Terrace, or veering to north the side? Then how is it getting across the bridge, will it be on traffic level or train level or in between? Bit confused
